Show & Tell / Blingtastic modern versals
« on: March 01, 2016, 11:28:26 PM »
Morning everyone!

I have been having a total ball with these little watercolour jewels this week, as you've probably seen on Instagram if you follow me :D I thought I would show them here too.

So, my calligraphy society had a workshop on "whimsical pointed pen," and one of the very last things we looked at were from Joanne Fink's book http://www.amazon.com/Zenspirations-Letters-Patterning-Joanne-Fink/dp/1574216996 (i hope it was this book! i've ordered it, anyway, so i'll find out soon :))

Totally fell in love. They're so bright and happy!  So in my off-hours all week, instead of sleeping, I've been drawing little simple versals and filling them in with dangles and doodles and scribbles and splashes. They've slowly evolved from basically copying out of the book into something a bit sturdier, but I bet once the book arrives I'll go straight back to them.

Anyway, here we go. The versal forms aren't very good because I was mostly drawing from memory. Don't do it, kids, always have an exemplar. Yikes.

The above two were done in the last few minutes of the class, without a proper pen, which is why the ink is all smeary. These were my first attempts.

Two more attempts at a K. You can see I'm starting to lose the 'zentangle' energy and the letters are getting a bit more solid and defined. I guess I'm naturally inclined to heaviness ... or at least, that's what I tell my bathroom scales ;)

I liked the way the colours came out in this M!

Most recent attempts and the ones I'm happiest with. Although seeing them at this size means the flaws are so obviousy ... all of these versals are actually less than 5cm square (about 2 inches).

These were a heap of fun, and the lovely Phyllis Macaluso has convinced me I should do a quick Periscope on them, so I guess you can keep an eye on my scope account if you're interested!  Probably tomorrow morning before work - somewhere around 5 or 6am Melbourne time.  (Mornings, I know, I know.)

So I think I'm getting the hang of this. I'm following a few people on Periscope now - Nina, Joi, Masgrimes - but does anyone else here do calligraphy broadcasts? I'm loving the dose of calligraphy on my commute each day!

Mine is Moya, @maybeworthwhile @moyagraphy, but I'm not planning to broadcast anything.

Tools & Supplies / Langridge Artist Pigments

Has anyone used these gorgeous babies before?

I've only used the lapis lazuli, and while it gives a gorgeous paint for historically-fairly-accurate (I don't think liquid gum Arabic out of a plastic bottle applied with a synthetic brush is quite right ;)) illumination, it's not so good in a pointed pen - particle size is much too big (10-20 microns) and I feel like it would also ruin the tip? It's literally crushed lapis lazuli, so it feels very much like rock (when you touch it, which you're probably not supposed to, as it's not all that healthy to breathe...).

However, I've run into a rush job that requires copper, and the only shop I could reach in my only free hour didn't have a gouache or the Pearl-Ex Super Copper I was hoping for - just a jar of pure fine copper particles.  It's absolutely beautiful in the jar ... the pigment size is very, very fine, and I suspect this will flow very nicely with gum arabic and water.  But I won't be home to try this out for hours yet, so I was hoping to get some sneaky insights from anyone with experience.

And I kind of want to buy all their other colours too ... has anyone tried any of those?

http://www.notemaker.com.au/ currently has a 15% sale on Rhodia - plus, if it is your first time shopping there, 10% discount with the code SIGNUP10.

I've never bought from them before, so I'll let you know how it goes - but given that A4 Rhodia pads are anything between $10 and $18 in stores around here, I couldn't pass up $7.50 each.

I saw this video linked on Tumblr by an artist friend, with several comments that these stretches have helped people who draw with physical media - so I figure we're probably also a good audience for it  ;)

David Kuckhermann

If the stretches are irrelevant to you guys, just listen to his dreamy accent instead  ;D

... is the text of a message my sister just sent me.

Then this picture.

Who wants to come visit me in Australia now???  ;D ;D ;D

(I told her there's no need to panic.  Nobody's died from a redback spider bite for like fifty years now.  Mostly you just have crippling pain for months ...)

Broad Edge Pen Calligraphy / CLAS National Diploma of Calligraphy
« on: January 12, 2015, 07:04:24 PM »
Does anyone have any experience with CLAS?  I can't return to my weekly calligraphy class this year for a few reasons (mostly because I'm studying law at the same time and things are just getting too much!) but I really do better when I have a formal goal to work towards, so I'm considering it.  Has anyone done it?  Got any hot tips?

Coffee & Nib-bles / Happy New Year, Flourish!
« on: December 31, 2014, 08:19:24 AM »
As your token Australian stranded on the other side of the dateline that's rapidly coming your way ... it's 16 minutes into 2015, and so far it's been an excellent year ... ;)

Wishing each and every one of you a truly fantastic, joyful, and calligraphic 2015.  May we all continue to flourish (ha ha do you see what I did there ...  :-X) in every way, into the new year.  You're a wonderful group of people and I'm so glad to call myself part of this crowd!

And now, like all good calligraphers who are secretly old ladies at heart, it's 12.18 so I'm going to bed ... haha :)

Introductions / Hello from Melbourne, Australia!
« on: December 18, 2014, 02:57:55 AM »
Hahaha.  I just realised that new members have to post an introduction ... and I never, ever did. So! Hi!  I'm Moya, I'm a 30-year-old office worker in the best city in the world (not biased or anything) and I love calligraphy.

I've been studying with whichever teachers come within my reach for about four years now, and I think that just barely qualifies me to consider myself a raw beginner... there is so, so much more to learn.  And the people you meet along the way are, almost without exception, THE BEST PEOPLE EVER.

I am the editor of my local calligraphy society's magazine and you should all subscribe so you can see what you're missing out on (and so you can judge my dodgy graphic design skills, oh yeahhhh).

And I have a blog-for-clients, and a blog-for-calligraphers-which-I-haven't-updated-in-ages, and an instagram, and I've tried to follow all my flourishers on Insta - let me know if I missed you!

Also, as you can tell from my post count, I just plain talk too much.  If I ever make it to the US to meet you all, you will see that's for sure true.

How YOU doin', Flourish?

So for those who don't know, I am the editor of my local society's magazine - you can take a peek at my most recent issue here:  http://www.calligraphysocietyvictoria.org.au/postscript/

I'm just now starting to find my feet and to get a little confidence, and to think about putting in articles that I would want to read, and that I would want to share.  Most of our content is local workshop reports, exhibition reports, upcoming workshop news - there have been editors in the past who made it more of a magazine and less of a newsletter, and that's what I'd like to do.

But.  I'm not very good at writing. And I'm a bit stuck for ideas...

If you were picking up a new magazine, what would you want to see in it?  What would make you go, "Hey, cool, I'll join this cool society!"

I'm starting as of now a 'Supplies Corner' - because whenever I get together with calligraphers, all we do is talk toys!  Phantom Liners, dotting tools, foil pens, so many things - I'm asking our members to review their faves, but I'll definitely be prepared to review mine as well.

Our society is much more focused on broad-pen calligraphy than pointed, but that doesn't mean I can't talk about my favourites :D .

But what else do you guys think might be cool?  We've had some good stuff recently - articles on how to prepare calligraphy for giclee printing, for example.  But that's been done now so I can hardly do it again!

I've never had a splash this bad before and I really want to save the jumper - but this particular acrylic gold (Kuretake) just does. not. wash. out.

Should I just say farewell to the top, and offer it as a sacrifice to the calligraphy gods? I must have offended them by my absence for so long ...

[Moderator note: This topic was split from another topic already in progress.  ;D]

29 and dying a bit inside thinking 30 is around the corner.......the "get married and have kids" pressure is real guys.  ;)

OMG Mollye you're not wrong!  Everywhere I turn my friends are pairing off and having babies ... I've only just turned 30, I'm not ready for that yet!
