Tools & Supplies / Re: Gold ink problems
« on: July 12, 2015, 03:05:04 PM »
Thanks to you all for the stirring suggestion, I've gone usually stir that ink like a roux but it never got back to a place where it could flow through a nib properly.  All the liquid seems to have evaporated (?) I'll blame it on a heat wave surge and re-order.
Thanks again, the sanity check was so helpful.

Tools & Supplies / Gold ink problems
« on: July 11, 2015, 07:55:51 PM »
Opened up a fresh bottle of Dr. PH Martins Copperplate a few days ago to start an envelope order and usually when I let it sit after a day working I get that separation of the thinner brownish color over the gold flecks and spend a little time mixing the two back together.  Today, for some reason I have brown gold sludge - no separation, just chunks of sludge :(

I've experimented in small batches with rubbing alcohol, gum arabic and water - they will all will eventually write, (though I can't get an upstroke which I usually don't have problems with) but the shimmer on the gold is just not the same - it reads more dull bronze.

Any thoughts?  I've got a new bottle on order and about to order Finetec and Pearlex as back ups but super bummed a brand new bottle is junk now and I have no clue what I did?

Thanks for any help calligraphy friends.

Hey Heather - You may want to reach out to Molly Suber Thorpe - I follow her on IG and she has been working in greek calligraphy for a while now.  I'm guessing she will know a lot about this word and may be able to give you some good input.  You can search #moderngreekcalligraphy if you want to see some of her work.

And my vote is for the Greek Alphabet too. :)

Hey Antonea- welcome to the Forum, I'm in Austin too.  I have not checked out Capitol City Scribes yet, but March's meeting is about Gold Bling - so enticing. :)

You're not alone Kate - I saw these and had a total freak out, too.  Then I picked my jaw up, took a deep breath and decided to just have fun.  Folks will be getting an experimental, sorta messy, but made with love valentine from me.  :)

Welcome Paulette!  I'm fairly new here too, but already enjoying every day here!

PS - Eastern Washington holds a special place in my heart.  My husband's family is from Tri-cities, and I went to college in Spokane. :)

Ugh - it's so irritating to hear about hand canceling going awry.  Every bridal magazine strongly suggests a hand cancel for your invitation, but do any talk about how frustrating it is to get done properly, how you could need additional postage or how your post office may have a different policy then Martha Stewart's?  ;) I think we should lobby for sturdier envelopes instead.

I'm like Jean, only took one lost order and I wont use them for packages.  I go to a Postal store so I can see comparison prices between the 3 options, I know I've paid more than USPS, but less than something else - so it feels like a good deal ;) Another tip, I've always found that the FedEx/UPS Ground rates (if available) tend to be comparable to USPS, if you have the time.

General How To's & Projects / Re: How to Mix Gouache
« on: December 19, 2014, 03:36:47 PM »
So funny Jean, I am the same!  I'll mix up fresh gouache and then find that I like it better in the second day. I thought it was something to do with my mixing technique or how much I was mixing.  I generally do a full dinky dip worth of gouache-ink to work on project, but glad it is not just me :)

Thanks Jean for the suggestions - I'm thinking the ink jet transfer would probably get the look I think she wants.

And Moya - Wow, great photo.  Magical indeed.

I know this was my own fault for depending on the postal service in a time crunch.  Nevertheless, I sent calligraphed wedding envelopes via USPS 2 day shipping.  The tracking system indicated they were delivered - in 3 days, not 2 days - but hey, I left a little buffer in my deadline, so all was well.  Same day, I get an email from my client who was tracking it too, she said that the package never arrived.  Nor the next day or the next day after that.  Complete nightmare.

I went back and forth for weeks with the Post Office, talked to at least 4 different customer "service" individuals, tried to track down the carrier - they never got back to me with any findings.  My client posted flyers in the building - nothing turned up.  Ultimately USPS refused to admit any fault because their tracking system says it was delivered - case closed.  The appeal process (which they denied, twice) required me to provide them documentation of my issue - essentially proving that the package was not delivered.  What does that even look like - video surveillance of the delivery NOT happening that day?!?!

Sigh.  Still bums me out a bit.

Hello New Calligraphy Friends:

Just wondering if anyone has experience getting lettering design or calligraphy onto a cotton fabric?  Nothing to be mass produced but just about 10 small sayings to be appliquéd on a Quilt; a request from my momma the quilter.

I've considered (finally) learning how to digitize and then perhaps printing to an iron-on transfer paper.  But not sure if anyone has tried other options, or if other options exist?  Microns are supposed to be safe for fabric, but I'm concerned they may bleed a bit much in small scale (maybe 2 inches square max).

The pattern is to actually embroider these sayings, but she's not a fan of embroidery, so that's where I come in  ;)

Thanks in advance!

And thank you all for the incredibly warm welcome!
