Kind Critique / Re: words
« on: January 07, 2014, 10:40:18 PM »
Thanks for your kind words, ladies!  They totally are inspiring me to pick up my oblique pen again.  I haven't touched it in about a month and totally miss it, yikes!  I guess the holiday craziness will do that :)

NikkiB - I have taken a few courses (both online and in person).  I did Melissa Esplin's online course in June of 2012, but then life happened and I didn't practice again until mid-2013.  That's more of what I consider my "start date" with calligraphy.

Still need to go back and do the lessons here, as I only got through lesson 1 before the holiday craze began.  Soon, I hope!!

So pretty!  Flourishes scare the heck out of me, but you make them look so natural!

Did some practice with the words.  I used gold ink because I was tired of the black and because...why not??

Thanks for all the great tutorials, Erica!

Kind Critique / Re: Basic Strokes
« on: November 20, 2013, 10:58:51 AM »
Thanks so much, Erica! I definitely see that I need to work on those o shapes more. I'm used to starting them just to the right, with an up stroke, curving up and over into the thick downstroke. Is that ok? I think starting them on the downstroke threw me a bit, lol! I'll work more on those.

I really, truly want to have beautiful calligraphy. I'm lucky that I can commit to 2-3 hours a day, most days, to this. So I have no excuse for not getting there, lol!

Thanks, again, for this space and the wonderful tuts you are putting out. I hope you believe in karma :)

Kind Critique / Basic Strokes
« on: November 19, 2013, 10:05:40 PM »
Worked on some of the strokes form Erica's (awesome) tutorial today.  Aside from the fact that there is a ton on ink bleeding going on (darn you, Higgins!!), I'd love to hear your thoughts.  How is the consistency?  What strokes should I continue to practice? I used the Hiro 41 on laser printer paper, on a light box with the guideline sheet underneath.

Any and all critique welcome :)

Thanks!

Any time, Nora!

Erica, I totally get it!  I used to be more comfortable in PS (I used to shoot professionally).  Do you use your mouse or a wacom tablet?  I ask because I pretty much credit Laura's classes for my knowledge, so you're definitely using a good resource (in my opinion).  I use a wacom tablet and can't even imagine doing Illustrator with a mouse.  We will both have to learn how to vectorize our calligraphy together in 2014 :)

What happens at the conference?  And how good do you have to be to go?

I actually sell rubber stamps in my shop on Etsy.  They aren't calligraphy stamps, but nice fonts.  I use simonstamp.com.  They have good pricing (especially wholesale) and great customer service.  I've never had any complaints, and all my customers seem to really like them.  I send them files in .bmp format, but I create everything in Illustrator.

Erica, do you ever vectorize your calligraphy?  I know there are some tutorials out there, but I still have a hard time with mine.

Looking forward to getting to know you better :)

Hi Sherry!

Nice to "meet" you :)  Your lettering is gorgeous (saw it on IG), as are your images.  I'm a big photo lover myself.  Looking forward to getting to know you better :)

I know exactly how you feel, Ellen!  I'm a bit of a perfectionist, too, and also tend to be low on that thing called patience.  Just yesterday I felt like throwing my pen down for good.  I was thinking, what's the point?  I'm never going to get this!  I'll have a practice session where I think I did ok, and then some where my letters look like chicken scratch.  It's like being on a roller coaster, isn't it?  Then, the next day I'll see/read/hear something and think, I can't give up.  And here we are :)  I do agree with Roseann that we are our own worst critics.  Truly.  I also really love Erica's suggestions.  Especially the one about not lettering when you're in a bad mood.  That's what happened to me last night.  The kids (I have 2 boys) were in rare form last night during bath/bed time and it just put me in a foul mood.  My letters were horrible after that, which just led me to feel defeated and like throwing in the towel.  I think one thing I try to remember is that we always see people's best online.  And we don't always realize how much time, effort and mess-ups they have gone through before getting to that point.  So I try not to compare myself to others (which is EXTREMEMLY hard!).

Good luck, friend!  I'm sure this too shall pass :)
