« on: December 12, 2015, 01:38:18 AM »
Hello all,
Got some new nibs today( thank you so very much Michael @johnnealbooksellers. The practice here is with a blue pumpkin on clearview vellum, winsor & newton gouache, and yes thie is coming out of my mouth, an oblique holder, imagine that me with an oblique holder. Lol. Its the speedball plastic contour that i converted. Decided new nibs so new start. Did a refresher of first couple leeson pages and going to do drills for a while to get back into it. I actually enjoyed tonight and i really like the blue pumpkin, a touch sharp but that wont last long. Thanks for looking,
Noah

Tools & Supplies / New Oblique Holder
« on: December 01, 2015, 10:58:02 PM »
Hello all,
I made an oblique pen from one of my many plastic speedball contoured holders. I cut the pen with a jewelers saw and made the flange from sheet brass. I added a little customizing to the end which my wife pointed out could be used as a stand and it does. Thanks for looking,
Noah

Tools & Supplies / Some goodies i have been tinkering with
« on: November 10, 2015, 02:29:41 PM »
Hey everyone,
I for get to post pictures on here sometimes because for some reason my iPhone saves them in some weird file that the forum here wont allow me to post from my phone. So i have to email or transfer my pictures to my computer and then upload, so i forget sometime. Here is some images of my tinkering with things. The first is i made some handles out of wood dowel and tubing. I have seen it done by many calligraphers on the internet and really like so i made some for my broad edges.
Next is a little stand i am working on. It has a mix of sizes so depending on what i am working on there is a spot for it. These pics are just test fitting and i still need to finish the stand, but i havent yet beca... oooo squirrel!!!
Thanks for checking out,
Noah

Kind Critique / Just some drills
« on: November 10, 2015, 02:17:23 PM »
Hey everyone,
Just some drills. I am using the strathmore 200 series Parchment, i get it at Michael's. It seems more like colored layout bond than parchment, i can see guides without a light box, but this is ok, i love layout bond. This is Winsor & Newton Gouache, mixed with some Gum Arabic. A hunt 22b nib, and my own ergo holder. Thank you for looking, I still feel like i am struggling, but i am hanging in there.

Tools & Supplies / Gouache question
« on: November 01, 2015, 01:42:09 AM »
Hello all,
Hope everyone have a happy and safe halloween, and those of you who do not celebrate or know what it is, well just a plain hello to you 😊
Now i have been trying out some gouaches and really enjoy the inexpensive artist loft from Michaels crafts, the reeves has been rough going but has potential, and i use. A coupon and bought a tube of jet black Winsor & Newton Gouache which has been wondeful, that missing link to fill that empty void in my calligraphy life. I almost dont want to use anything else. Now to my question, they all have vatying levels of tooth once dry with the W&N having the heaviest. Now i dont mind a whole lot but i know there will be times and applications that it is not wanted. Any of the gouache users add anything to it other than distilled water, especially to smooth out the texture. I know gum arabic is used and i know that it gives the gouache some translucence if im not mistaken. I dont eant to lose the bold opacity of the gouche. I appreciate any insight anyone has. Thank you so much, i look forward to hearing back.

I have never won in bidding on Ebay always just dont buy now, or when i do bid i always lose. I can not wait to play. Thanks for looking,

Kind Critique / Mama did not raise a quitter.
« on: October 28, 2015, 11:12:33 PM »
Hello all,
I have been beating myself up over the struggle of nothing working right with my copperplate and enjoying my broad-dge that i was going to back burner copperplate. It has been eating at me to want to keep doing it. SO last night felt like giving another try. My first page was a nightmare, nothing worked. Until my last try was with my Michaels brand gouache. I struck pay-dirt. I have found that my 22b nib on cheaper strathmore parchment with Micheals gouache has finally given some results that are good enough for me to continue. The second image is that practice. Thank you all for being so wonderful through this journey and i am so grateful have you along with me.
Thanks for looking,
Noah
P.s one line is wonky do to the slipping of my paperclips. :)

Broad Edge Pen Calligraphy / My new homemade automatic pen
« on: October 25, 2015, 11:23:20 PM »
Hello everyone,
I received my jewelers saw and played around with some scraps of brass and made an automatic pen. It works great so i will plan to make myself a set with a little more planning and precision. This one is 11mm, ink is speedball super black on clearprint tracing paper from a roll.
Thanks for taking a look,
Noah

Zentangles / Question about Zentangle category
« on: October 24, 2015, 02:35:39 AM »
Hello everyone,
I have a question, probably more toward Erica but the advice or opinion from everyone is always welcome. Is this strictly Zentangle posts only or would zendoodle, doodles, and mandalas and any other tangle, doodle inspired work be ok to post here as well. I know there is a big debate about it and they all are seperate even thogh there is alot od resemblance to each other. Id like to post some of my work here but i do necessarily do Zentangle specifically. If this category is specific what would be best place to post, or maybe thee could be a doodle category, or something. I want to follow proper etiquette. My instagram haa some examples of what i do if anyone curious as to what i am referring to. It can be linked from my signature as i am not sure to put in message here because i am not trying to promote my page just provide example. Thank you for taking a moment to read this i look forward to hearing from everyone.

Open Flourish | General Discussion / Some B-day goodies.
« on: October 21, 2015, 11:12:06 PM »
Hello everyone,
Since tomorrow my B-day i got a couple dollars to go to art store for a little shopping. I got some Canson tracing paper, they dont have Rrhodia :(  i got a couple inks. An orange and teal Dr ph Bombay india, a Dr ph balck star, a couple of my fav inks Winsor & Newton calligraphy ink, Blue black and Indian red, for my parallel pens and and i saw a few who enjoy the hunt 22b in the Hiro 41 discussion so i am giving another try thanks to the wonderful framily ( yes i said framily, flourish forum is my friend/family now) helping me off the ledge in my last post, that i am not ready to even decide if i am switching type yet. I will as usual post my progress. Thank you everyone. Have a great night, or day depending where you are.
Thanks,

Open Flourish | General Discussion / At a crossroad.
« on: October 18, 2015, 11:42:54 PM »
Hey all,
I have to say i have been learning a whole lot about calligraphy and myself on this wild and exciting journey. The first thing id like to say is i finally worked gouache last night and i am in love, i almost dont want to use any thing else. I have just cheap artist loft and reeves sets but they are working kust fine.
Now my big dilemma is that i have been struggling with my copperplate. I understand is not an easy journey by any means but i seem to always be battling the nib( still havent clicked with one yet) paper, ink etc. works decent one day, wonky the next. I have been simultaneously teaching myself gothic and brush lettering. Which in lies my dilemma, i seem to have really falling for broad edge, quadrata and fraktur, but enjoy the many forms of black letter. Im talking about cannot do anything with out thinking about working on it, it is like that first time you fall in love.  I feel i want to pursue that more exclusively but i feel lly guilty about it.
Does anyone have any perspectve, insight, opinion etc? Anyone have this or similar dilemma. I am game for open honest dialogue, anyone want to say anything i am all ears. I look forward to everyones comments.
Thanks for looking,
Noah
