@Ken Fraser It so nice to see you posting videos, not just images. It's always interesting how much touching up happens every time we write. I don't even notice doing it anymore, unless I video myself!

It is not a pen...I think it is a pen accessory.  Does anyone know what the use of this instrument is?

Looks great for scooping pigments and scraping mistakes. Calligraphy...the latest drug.

My guess is that the font is inspired by Showcard lettering. The name Quick seems to support that, since showcard writing was all about speed!

If you wanted to copy it, it would be written with a broadedge or brush.

Good luck with the move Erica! I grew up in North Nashville and  it was a great place to grow up. My mom always dreamed of living in the Franklin area, we would go open houses there often on the weekends.

Spencerian Script / Re: With nib or brush?

If you are a member of IAMPETH, their latest journal just came out where they talk all about this. There is even a sample that shows how he out lined all the shades before filling them in.

I feel your pain, literally! After doing calligraphy for about 5 years, I just gave myself my first accidental tattoo last month. That will teach me to be distracted while my nib is inked!

Broad Edge Pen Calligraphy / Re: Mitchell Nib Question
« on: September 14, 2019, 11:03:40 PM »
My Mitchells are scratchier than others. I’ve honed the top side a bit wet on the back of a plate and that seems to help. Sounds like yours is particularly bad though, because my ink flows quite easily. So you may want to try with a new nib. It may be a dud.

As for the reservoir, they should be pretty close to the writing edge. Maybe a mm? If it’s dumping on you it may be too close. I also find that it gets in the way of a crisp line on the smaller nibs (like maybe 4 and smaller).

Hope this helps.

Guidelines / Re: guidelines

You can always measure and draw your own guidelines. It's a good skill to practice, occasionally. But http://shipbrook.net/guidelines/ also has a landscape option.

I don't know the answer to this. But personally I only clean them out if the lids get too gunky to close well. Really that only ever happens with my sumi dinky dip. Otherwise I just make sure to give it a good store everyday or when I top it off. And if the ink starts getting thick, I just stir in a few drops of water.

Welcome to the forum Chris! There are a number of us here. If you continue struggling while learning all by yourself, I suggest looking at the Friends of Calligraphy classes. They are pretty affordable, and cover a lot of different styles. I took the copperplate last year; it was great!

Welcome Kim! There’s a very active guild down in LA that you should check out if you have trouble keeping up with it all on your own.
