For Your Enjoyment
« on: May 12, 2017, 09:51:34 AM »
@schin  @Erica McPhee  @AndyT @Ken Fraser
I'm a little behind in my reading--magazines stack up next to the refrigerator as they come in, and the stack is about to prevent the overhead cabinet from opening, so to reduce the stack, I chose the earliest one--and was perusing Volume 47, No. 5 of "The Educator" (January, 1942), wherein I found this lovely exemplar of Italian Capitals by C. P. Zaner Thought some of you might like it for your collection.

I'm always so fascinated by these caps. I love studying them and thinking through how each stroke was made.

Thanks for sharing!

So looking at the shades --- another one of those tricky direction ones... it's the horizontal shades that are most perplexing. Turned the paper sideways to write?

Perplexing, yes.  They all seem to follow a sort of left-to-right, south-to-north sort of orientation, so my guess would be that the pen was held flourishing style.  The minuscules at the top are normal, however.

Scan on the way.

Hah! I wish I could order these magazines. I picked up about 19 of these (1942-1946) a while back, and have yet to read them all. It's a lot of fun looking through these. Some of the things in the last iteration of "The Business Educator" have been published in earlier editions (as this Zaner alphabet must have been, as he died in 1918), and some are contemporary to the edition. Still a lot of talented people around in 1942.

This is beautiful. I searched Archive.Org and they have copies of The Educator available for view online (with permission from Zaner-Bloser).

This link takes you to Volume 47 and it contains issues 1 - 10 https://archive.org/details/educator47zane.

Thank you so much for sharing this. I learn something new here everyday  ;)
