English Roundhand example
« on: December 11, 2016, 06:43:48 PM »
Note the out-of-date form of the letter w in "flowing".

When I was learning this style, I had difficulty in remembering how this letter is formed. It's a very beautiful shape but unfamiliarity makes the modern reader look twice!

Hi Ken,

You're calligraphy is gorgeous.  I'm doing more than I double take on that letter...  What is it?  I am trying to guess...  I would guess w, because it makes sense in the word. Will you please tell me.

Hi Christina,
I presume you are referring to the alphabet in Flo w ing.  That is the old style "w" which was a n and v combined. If you look at some old writing examples in books like the Universal Penman, you will see this w used a lot.

I think it has been replaced now with the standard "w" as this is a little confusing for non-calligraphers.
