Workshops & Conference News / Class announcement for all you Michael Sull fans out there!

The Washington Calligraphers Guild is very excited to host Michael Sull's first-ever Spencerian Saga on Zoom.

The Zoom webinar will take place on four Wednesday evenings, starting June 2 through 23 from 7:30-9:30 EDT.

You do not have to be a WCG member to sign up. Registration is $140 USD.

If you cannot attend live, that's totally fine. The Webinar will be recorded and you will have access to the recordings between classes and for an additional month through July 22. We also plan to have a Slack forum for students to share their practice and stay motivated between class sessions. Even if you cannot attend the webinar live, you'll still have a chance to interact and engage in real time with your classmates.

The class is listed as intermediate to advanced, but I encourage anyone who is interested in Michael Sull's work, Spencerian, flourishing and ornamental penmanship to sign up. You'll learn about the history of Spencerian and ornamental penmanship, get fantastic handouts from Michael, and have access to the class recordings for rewatching.

For those who dreamed of learning with Michael at IAMPETH but couldn't, this is the opportunity for you. Wherever you are in the world, come join us.

Tools & Supplies / Permanent, long-lasting, no-fade ink

I have a commission to do a family tree. Lettering will be fairly small, so I want the black ink to be legible, matte in color, and most importantly permanent. My client hopes to pass this artwork on to her children, their children, and so on and so forth, down the line. Do you all have recommendations for black ink that will not fade over time? I really like writing with McCaffrey's black, but I'm not sure how susceptible the ink is to fading many, many years from now. Any thoughts about sumi ink?

Tools & Supplies / Emergency Calligraphy Kit: Recommendations?

I have a client whose department hosts a lot of special events on site. On occasion, they need to do a last-minute place card, reply card or envelope. She had asked me what I would recommend for an emergency calligraphy kit that they can keep in their office for such last-minute situations.

I believe nib and dip pen are not appropriate for this kit, since the letterer may be an employee that has nice handwriting, but has no training in calligraphy. Therefore, an assortment of black markers and pens may be ideal. Do you all have suggestions for this kit, preferably tools that are good but not expensive? The office commissions both Copperplate and Italic hands for its events.

Tools & Supplies / Calligraphy supplies in NYC

Morning, anyone know of stores in NYC that sell calligraphy specific supplies (nibs, holders, inks)? I'll be there for a week, and thought I'd do some browsing.

NYC has great art supply stores: Sam Flax, Central Art Supply, sadly just saw Pearl closed recently, etc. Also, I went to Kinokuniya recently and they didn't have as much calli supplies as I thought. I want to make sure that I visit the hidden gems.

Introductions / Good morning from Washington, DC!

Hi all,

My name is Janice. I stumbled upon the forum (which was VERY useful) when I got my first wedding calligraphy job a few months back. Since then, I've been lurking, but decided it's time to come out of the shadows.

Ever since I was a child, I loved handwriting and was constantly changing my penmanship to whatever style appealed to me at the time. I dabbled with broad edge pen calligraphy in the past, but now I mostly do versions of Copperplate and Engrosser's script. I still consider myself a novice and am dedicated to practicing and learning more.

I love sending and receiving postal mail, so if anyone is interested in being pen pals, please feel free to message me. In particular, I'd be happy to do letter exchanges with fellow Filipino enthusiasts. (It's great to see how popular calligraphy is in the Philippines!)
