Show & Tell / Uniqlo Street Tales
« on: July 05, 2015, 10:04:46 PM »
My calligraphy is on a shirt, a Uniqlo shirt! Gaah! Sorry, I'm still gushing until now :)

I just want to share this project I did for one of the advertising companies here in Singapore.  It is for the 50-year celebration of the country, and they partnered up with Uniqlo to showcase different artworks that depict Singaporean culture.  And I'm just so happy they included mine haha.

It's not the best or most consistent calligraphy, or digitized work actually (I really have to learn this stuff), but still!  I'm so glad they found it good enough to be included :)

For those who are in Singapore, you can choose to have any of the designs printed in the Bugis+ mall.  All proceeds will go to the Community Chest charity.

Tools & Supplies / Alternative to Windex?
« on: January 19, 2015, 10:27:09 PM »
hello!

i've read that a vinegar and water mix is a more eco-friendly and cheaper option to windex.  well, at least for cleaning appliance/furniture.  but has anyone tried using this to clean nibs too?  do you think vinegar will work well with them?

just want to know how is it for you guys trying to teach family members calligraphy.  for me, it's a whole hour of bloopers :)

so i taught my husband some basic calligraphy strokes last night.  his handwriting is literally like chicken scratch haha.  so last night, he insisted that i teach him.  i gave him the tools and showed him the strokes.  we had to try the slanted lines alone several times because he couldn't put pressure on the nib to make that thick downstroke.  it was as if he was still holding a regular ballpoint pen :)  and when he finally did, it was a straight line.  so i asked him to turn and turn and turn his paper just to give his strokes more angle.  turned out, he had to place his paper in a perpendicular position just to get it going. so, yay!  he was actually weirded out of that position that he kept on asking if that was the way to do it.  i told him as long as he was comfortable, the paper could be placed in any position  :P

oh, and he must have finished half of the wet wipes pack because he was grossed out of the ink smears  :P

what about you?

Show & Tell / can't get enough of finetec :)
« on: November 09, 2014, 09:26:54 PM »
just want to share this piece i've written for my friend.  she wrote the poem and asked me to write it in calligraphy.  of course, i had to write it in finetec :)

i wrote this using a leonardt principal, which really amazed me because i had very difficult time using it before.  i stopped using it because it snagged on almost every paper i tried it on.  now, it writes like a breeze! woohoo!  i actually like it more now than the brause 66ef :)

Tools & Supplies / calligraphy nibs holder

this is interesting...although for someone who doesn't have space and just keeps everything piled, this is kinda dangerous...

Tools & Supplies / badger paint mixer
« on: October 01, 2014, 05:07:06 AM »
i was browsing through paper ink arts' website and i came across this item:

http://paperandinksupply.com/badger.html

it looks like a mini hand mixer, and it supposedly functions just like the speedstir (for iridescent inks).  has anyone ever used this?  it is way cheaper than the magnetic stirrer that they also sell; but i guess, it's because you still have to continuously dip it in the ink to stir it.

what do you guys think?

Tools & Supplies / Recommended oblique holder
« on: September 24, 2014, 08:30:26 PM »
I really want to get a good oblique holder to better my slants and forms.  As of now i only have the plastic speedball :(

What do you guys recommend from PIA? I am quite overwhelmed with their options, and am not really sure which one to get. I prefer to get one that fits different sizes of nibs. Much as i would like to get heebs' teal colored holder, or one of uniqueoblique's, i can't quite afford them yet.

So what do you guys recommend?

probably i got inspired by natascha  :P

so, i joined a sort of a flea market event here in singapore.  it's gonna happen next month.  ;D

just want to share the story of how it went:
i was on down-time mode with work the past few days, and i chanced upon their website.  i actually heard of them before, but never thought of joining/applying as a vendor.  on their website, it said they have another even this coming weekend.  without any thought at all, i just filled out their seller's application details and uploaded some photos of my crafts (the paper flowers and envelopes that i made). i also uploaded a photo of the pouch bag that i hand-lettered.  i didn't upload any calligraphy-related photo because (and i just realized it then!) i didn't have any quality photo, and no photo of just calligraphy samples.  anyway, i decided to go with my paper crafts.  they noted on their website that it usually takes them 10 days to reply. so if you don't get a reply, you probably didn't get in.

so i submitted, and then forgot about it.  then, i received an invitation at about 11:30 pm!  haha!  initially, i thought it was for this coming weekend's event (that i even rattled my half-asleep husband to help me plan immediately).  and then i read the email again...okay, it was for next month.  phew!

so there :)  i already confirmed and paid for my booth slot, and am super excited.  i asked them if i could also sell other stuff that wasn't included in the photos that i initially sent, and they said yes!  so if i have time, i'd probably do mini posters in calligraphy, or maybe cards :)

there!  i'm just so excited.  this is my first time actually showcasing the crafts i've been making :)

Completed/Past Exchanges / Birthday Exchange
« on: July 14, 2014, 10:17:13 PM »
since we're all still "on a high" with the summer exchange...why don't we have a birthday exchange?  maybe we can have a list of all our birthdays, and then send cards to all celebrants who will celebrate their birthdays on a certain month?

what do you guys think? :)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE:
hi peeps, for those wanting to join the birthday list...here are the instructions from natascha @sisterofdream:

that you want to join.  She'll send you a link to the Google Doc she created for the birthday list.
  • Update the birthday list and other details on the doc.

You might have to check the bday list once in a while to see if there are additional peeps who added their birthdays.

Tools & Supplies / holder for brause 511
« on: July 09, 2014, 10:12:23 PM »
hi!

is there a specific holder that would hold the brause 511?  i bought this 3-in-1 pack of brause nibs...a 66ef, a 511 and another one which i forgot (but it's a small blue nib).  the 511 and the blue nib doesn't fit in any of my holders, even in the tachikawa holder with concentric rings.  i don't understand why.  the 66ef fits in that tachikawa holder, but the other two, which seems to me is the same size as the 66ef, do not.

any thoughts? recommendations?

Coffee & Nib-bles / I'm a 90s girl...what about you?
« on: July 02, 2014, 10:20:19 PM »
I feel most relaxed and in-the-zone when songs from the 90s are playing (earphones stuck into my ears are optional, and done only in the office  ;D).  I do this when I'm doing calligraphy, sketches, or the most boring of manuals and instruction guide.  Anyway,I think 90s is the era of the best music.  I love Radiohead and the Cranberries and Tori Amos and Alanis!  I could go on :)

What about you guys, what tickles your ears?  ;)
