Can you more fully describe what issue you're having?  Does the last name have an "Mc" in it, like "McDonald"?  Or is it an abbreviation for a title, like "Dr." is an abbreviation for "Doctor"?  I'd love to help you, if you can give me some more information about the issue!

Thanks, Janis!  Yes, it is an Mc as in McCulliff.  I believe the first (small) c is written in lower case with the next letter, a C in this case, is written in upper case but want to make sure!  I appreciate your help!!

Almost always the next letter is in uppercase - like McCuliff - so unless they've told you differently, I would do that :)

My favourite way to deal with the awkwardness there is by dropping the finishing loop of the M down below the line, so that you can tuck the little c in above it without an awkward space; but it's not always easy!

Do you place the lower case "c" (in this case McCulliff) on the "x" line?  I have not seen any examples of it being written elevate like the "th" after 10th might be.

Thanks!!!

Here are a couple of the ways I might do it - ignore the rubbish ballpoint pen, I'm actually at work sneaking online in my break ;)

And ignore my double-F ... lowercase F is giving me trouble right now!

The first and third ways are correct. The small c sits on the line.

BTW Mc is an abbreviation of Mac which means 'son of'

In Scotland, those named Mc and Mac are very fussy about the correct version being used for them, when in fact a long time ago they were interchangeable, sometimes even within the same family!

In early days, many people couldn't read or write and were dependent on the Clergy for writing their names down, and according to the personal whim of the writer, Mc or Mac was written.

Thus endeth the lesson  :P

Hi, Kim!  I concur with the advice you've been given!  The "c" is lower case in the "Mc" & the next "C" is capitalized!

@Ken, this is great information. My maiden name is MacKenzie, and I will be writing this a lot on my wedding invites in a few months. I always wondered whether the Mc's and Mac's were related. Thanks Kim for posting this! :)

Thank you Ken!  I'm willing to bet any future Scottish clients of mine will be pleased I know this now :D  Thanks!

Thanks so much everyone - especially Moya for the photo and Ken for the historical meaning!  I thought the lower case c was supposed to sit on the "line" but wanted to be absolutely sure!
