i found that even with the finest nibs (think xxxf or needle point nib) the nib is grounded to a round point.  if your nib to paper is not at the optimal angle you will get more feedback or writing/scratchy noise.

I don't have an oblique holder, but then again I am only trying to write at a 30° angle. I am also unable to get much shading.

I use mostly (98 percent) only a straight holder for Spencerian, italic and black lettering.  I don't do Engrosser script.  When I do switch over to an oblique, the scratching goes away and the shading is more easy.

How much shading have a lot to do with skill, nib, ink, and paper combinations.  First skill then nib. I find paper and ink is a different animal in itself.

For easiest familiarity, try different nib.  For skills, you need pratice so do drills and lots of it.
