Pinky pain from resting hand on it
« on: January 13, 2018, 12:59:19 PM »
Hi everyone!

So I guess cramps and pains are common, but does anyone know the pain in your pinky finger that comes from writing a long time and resting your hand on it?
Do you have any suggestions on how to avoid this/get rid of it?

Best,
Natascha

Natascha- I get terrible pinky pain, and initially thought it was from resting my hand on it.  It has progressed, and now the pain extends to just above my elbow on bad days, which tells me it's a tendon or muscle issue.  It's particularly noticeable when I bend my hand backward with my fingers straightened, and I've discovered that I can't bend it back as much as I can in my non-writing hand.  I've made an effort to stretch it and not overwork it.  I really hope the issue is not the same with you, but that's where I ended up.

If it's really from resting your hand on it, you should probably adjust your grip. However, if it's like Bianca mentioned and a stretching issue you may be gripping everything too tightly. I find holding a paper towel (or part of one) in my hand while I write helps remind me to loosen up. I also find this video really useful for stretching and making sure I can come back and write every day. ;)

NICE- thanks for posting that video, Katie!

My grip has been actually quite loose for some years now, but I feel like maybe the damage had been done from years of death grip before that (and probably a few other factors).  I've also rotated my grip so that only the top of my first knuckle hits the paper, versus almost the whole side of it.

Natascha, is it joint pain or is the whole finger?
