Contemporary Calligraphy Kits & Exemplars
« on: January 03, 2014, 08:04:22 PM »
Hi, saw that Ellen had mentioned wanting to see some contemporary exemplars, so here are a few I can think of off the top of my head. If you click through to their sites, you'll see samples of their modern calligraphy.

Bailey Amon Rivera of Antiquaria
Blog with all her calligraphy tutorial posts: http://antiquariavintage.blogspot.com/search/label/Calligraphy%20Tutorial
Her online tutorial is on-going, with one letter at a time. Calligraphy starter kit: http://www.shopantiquaria.com/calligraphy-starter-kit/

Maybelle Imasa-Stukuls - http://www.may-belle.com/
Maybelle travels all over the world to teach workshops. Her calligraphy kit available in her Etsy but her shop is currently "on vacation."

Thanks for this Linda. I particularly liked Antiquaria, when I was having a hard time with capitals. They have video tutorials now too, so awesome. Haven't heard of Emilie Friday so will def check her site out.

Antiquaria is great! I wish all these online tutorials were around when I started. All the tutorials back then were on YouTube, from master penmen which I found totally intimidating.

When I decided to be more serious about calligraphy a few years ago, I purchased Emilie's kit on Etsy. Back then she didn't have any exemplars, just pen, ink, nib, and a folio. But I really like her style - she was formally trained and has taken her calligraphy to the next level by creating beautiful contemporary styles. This was before the days of IG and Pinterest, so it wasn't as easy to find calligraphers online. I emailed her some questions, and she encouraged me to look up IAMPETH and also a local calligraphy guild and that's how I found my current teacher. :)

The exemplars and handouts in these kits are delicious! I absolutely love Antiquaria's style. It is both modern and elegant at the same time.

While it may be worth it to purchase one of these kits for the exemplars (depending upon your budget), it is definitely more cost effective (in most cases) to buy the supplies via John Neal or Paper & Ink Arts.

I have submitted a class kit to both and hope they will be posted on their respective sites shortly. But it includes the following.

From John Neal:

H95. Speedball Deluxe (Comfort Grip) Oblique Pen Holders – sized for Nikko G.
OR
H96. Peerless Oblique Holders (Black Plastic) – sized for Nikko G

N113. Nikko G Nib (5)
N82. Hiro Crown Nib (#41)  (5)

I53-2.5. Walnut Drawing Ink
I70. Moon Palace Sumi Ink, 2 oz.
I38. Dr. Martin's Bleed Proof White Ink (optional)

S852. Small Dinky Dips (S304)

From Paper & Ink Arts:

item # spdper - Oblique Red or Blue Peerless Holder
OR
item # peerls - Peerless Oblique Holder

item # walbot –Walnut Ink, 2.6 oz.
item # moonpa – Moon Palace Sumi Ink
item #drmbld – Dr. PH Martin’s bleedproof white (optional)

item # hiro41 – Hiro 41 nibs (5)
item # nikkoG - Nikko G nibs (5)

item #dinkyd – Dinky Dips 4 square

The total cost is roughly $50 including the bleedproof white.

Warm Regards,
Erica

I love Antiquaria's lowercase 'q' the most :)
