Hello Flourish Friends!
The lists have been sent out for the Favorite Book Exchange. There were 70 members signed up and for the first time ever, the number of international members outnumbered the US members! Woohoo! :)

Hi Sharon! Just so happens I had a book in mind wayyyy back when this exchange topic was announced, so it was just a matter of picking a quote and putting it down. I'm very new with calligraphy so that could by why I'm so quick too... no crazy flourishing and stuff :P haha Hope you like it nonetheless!!

I got mine at the end of last week! I'm saving it to open them all together, though. The envelope is beautiful - my husband was so impressed when he got the mail! Still working on mine-can't wait to finish them up and get them in the mail before Saturday.

The woman at the post office complimented the envelopes (and she usually is not very nice to people), she even handed me the stamps because she did not want to ruin the letters because of a not-perfectly-straight stamp! It made my day! But don't get too excited, I suppose her reaction is because she is not used to see calligraphied envelopes, but they are not that good!

I am sorry but I just noticed this... I made a mistake on the printout of List 5. Marjorie (and Clare) is actually on List 5 (although her list says, "List 1.") ... so you are OK Scarlet! ;D

You're welcome. As a matter of fact, I did take this photo, the day before I made the cards. I had planned to use another photo I took earlier this year, but this subject appeared at the house and seemed just perfect for the message.

Yes! I know...I'm so excited. It's the Canon Pixma MG7720. The 6820 does as well. I will write a post when I get it and try it out! :)

That would be interesting to know! I did use a quote from a book in public domain, so I suppose it is safe. But, what about modern books?? I think spanish laws allow to copy from a book in a small percentage from the total content, so I think a quote could be used, if it is for personal or educational use. Could this exchanges be accounted into the "educational purposes" because they are mainly for calligraphy practices?
In spanish laws, you can copy whatever you want by yourself (you cannot pay another person to copy it for you) if it is for your personal use AND you have an original too. I mean, if you buy a book, you can calligraphy whatever content of it to frame and display in your house, for example.

Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 106 and 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright. In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include—
(1) the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
(2) the nature of the copyrighted work;
(3) the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and
(4) the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.
Let's first consider the purpose of what we are doing here. We are studying the art of calligraphy, and exchanging evidence of progress, suggestions for improvement, sharing the findings of our research, and reviewing sources that we use. This is scholarship in its purest form. Fair use of copyrighted works for purposes of scholarship is not an infringement.
To further support this, let's look at the individual factors used for this particular case of favorite book exchanges:
(1): The purpose and character of the use in these exchanges is certainly not of a commercial nature. Good.
(2) The nature of the copyrighted work (at least in the favorite books exchange) is certainly not secret or proprietary or anything like that. It's meant to be disseminated and read, so it's not like we're spreading trade secrets or anything (at least, I assume not. I haven't gotten all my cards yet!). Good.
(3) "The amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole" here is a single sentence or two from an entire book. These are miniscule portions of the book as a whole. When I looked at the guidelines at the university where I taught last year on reproductions of works for class, the limit was 10% or a whole chapter, whichever was less. Our quotes are certainly less than that. Good.
(4) What we are doing certainly does not damage the market for the source work. No one is going to get a favorite book exchange card and think, "Oh, well, I've read this sentence, now there's no point in going out and buying the book, which I otherwise was going to do." In fact, it's more likely people will be intrigued by the quote and go out and buy it than the reverse. And even if they did decide that the card was as good as the book, I can't imagine that the effect on the market of six fewer sales of a given work is substantial enough to warrant a copyright violation.
So, in conclusion, I think that these exchanges count as fair use, and there's nothing wrong with them.

I worked very hard to open the envelope without damaging your exquisite seal. Marjorie, your book looks like a lot of fun (I had to look it up), and I'm curious to see how it matches with the color and script you chose. Your writing is adorable, like a pudgy toddler, and the bright magenta color reinforces it.

Oh, Karen, I assumed you received mine. To my surprise, today the envelope was in my mailbox with two big (not so attractive) postal stamps that say Addressee unknown, and Incomplete address. I checked it against the list and everything was correct except I accidentally left off "Champion House". I guess that was enough for your post office to reject it. I'm so sorry! I will have to redo it and hopefully it works next time. I'm sorry it took so long to make its way back to me. It's been so long that I thought this was from the bling bling exchange, but alas, it was from our favorite book exchange. I will get it back in the mail soon!
