Tools & Supplies / Re: Pearl-ex Pigment Powders for Ink
« on: January 02, 2015, 11:27:19 PM »
Lyndsay,

I use the ratios Joi suggested in this thread. And I tweak it from there. On these examples I already had red ink in my lower barrel. That seemed to help create the base color. I have also combined pearl ex with walnut ink and a blue fountain pen ink. For the complimentary color, I mix up the pearl ex in a paint well pan and make the mixture thicker than what I place inside the pens.
Also, changing colors in the parallel pens require patience. I look forward to seeing where you take this Lindsay. Your calligraphy is lovely.

Design & Layout / Name layout and design project
« on: January 01, 2015, 11:56:30 AM »
Thanks Erica for creating this topic thread. I will be the guinea pig and go first.

My friend has asked me to make a 4x6 card which has her friend's name on it and the meaning of her name. She intends to frame the card. I want to combine two alphabet/letter styles: unical and copperplate. I am a beginner with both. I am a beginner with all things artistic. :)

I have attached a scan of my layout on a grid paper. The bottom design is where I want to head. I've attempted to be more modern with my copperplate and find that awkward, but I think I can make that work with some more practice.

As for inks, I was going to use a parallel pen with a combo of Pearl Ex inks for the unical letters. And  black sumi ink for the copperplate.

I need suggestions for paper. White? Ivory? Color? Use watercolors to wash the paper first? I have Strathmore cold press watercolor paper and various kinds of cardstock.

Embellishments - do I fill in any of the white space?  I have no experience with flourishing. I have no drawing training other than Zentangle.
Could I try some simple watercolor flowers or marks?

So please offer suggestions:
spacing
size of letters
layout
color choices
paper choices
embellishments
and any other helpful tips.

Thanks in advance for being my teachers. I am grateful.

I received Vol 1 & 2 of Dasherie and margin to play and practice. Wonderful!

Scarlet Blue, I am delighted for you about the typewriter. My son brought a good laugh home from college. A guy in his dorm produced a Youtube video called 'Pass the Salt'. It may enhance your enjoyment of the typewriter.  :)

Blessings everyone!

Dasherie Vol. 1 & 2 were gifted to me by my teens today. They were so excited to surprise me.

Both issues are lovely and inspiring and graceful. Erica, it is a delight to share in your joy. Well done!

Suggestions & Ideas / Re: Categories
« on: November 30, 2014, 02:08:18 PM »
I have no formal art or design background and I would benefit from learning Layout Form and Design for my calligraphy projects. Erica, would you consider adding this as a category? You may have other ideas on what to name this category. Graphic Design? Layout Design?

I love the forum. As it gets larger, so many wonderful ideas are buried deep within...
