Open Flourish | General Discussion / Re: My Compendium of Lettering Styles

Ken, are you a master penman yet?  Because I swear after oggling and drooling after all your exemplars I am FLOORED...they are amazing...I'm out of words to describe my awe after this...
I would simply say I am old school on the matter, meaning I look at a person's work and compare it to the best work ever published that I've seen (for example, the "Universal Penman" for English Roundhand). Is Ken's work comparable? Yes, it is, again, in my opinion. That makes him a master by my lights. In olden times, that's how the title was granted, informally--by a person's peers based on the person's work. Whether or not a person has an "official" title granted by a self selected group is quite irrelevant.

Well said @AnasaziWrites. Cant put that in any better ways. Thanks bro :D

Tools & Supplies / Re: Homemade walnut ink
« on: December 05, 2018, 12:00:29 AM »
I have made some walnut ink this year for the first time. I tried it out yesterday for the first time and it wrote beautifully. However, 24 hours later the writing is still sticky.

Did you make it through Walnut crystals or Walnut hulls? In any case it shouldn't be sticky, strange. But I guess as Erica said try and use Gum Arabic.

Lot of IG members were also disappointed with the ads that bothered and been much more commercialised than before. But i think in a way if you restrict yourself to what you do and just be in that zone it wont harm much. Yes there are positives and negatives of social media and we have to choose wisely what we would want.

Thanks @Estefa for this lovely thread. :D

I would like to visit Toronto for sure and have a long longing to meet my mentor @Salman Khattak. If he wouldn't have supported me in my journey I wouldn't be what I'am today in Calligraphy. :D

Andrew, Thanks for sharing these awesome advts. The first ad reminds me of playing that game during my childhood. We used to puncture the ball and tie it to a bat. India never had these products.

Hi Diane,
I agree with Jean. During my Art college days we used to use local made brushes for work and they were dirt cheap. As you progress you can always buy the more professional ones.

Warm welcome Crane :D
Spencerian is a good way to start. Also you can experiment parallelly with different scripts to know what you like the most.
Sometimes doing them practically will give you a better idea.

Feel free to ask if you have any doubts.

Hi Gil,

Welcome to FF. And the post written in chinese is so good. Wonder the pen's nib is bent down for any specific reason?
So what do you want to start with... since you have mentioned cursive writing you can start with Business penmanship and move to spencerian and so on.

Dont hesitate to ask if you have any doubt.
