A different kind of mail exchange...
« on: December 22, 2014, 07:43:45 PM »
I just couldn't resist sharing this...

In 1913 it was legal to mail children. With stamps attached to their clothing, children rode trains to their destinations, accompanied by letter carriers. One newspaper reported it cost fifty-three cents for parents to mail their daughter to her grandparents for a family visit. As news stories and photos popped up around the country, it didn't take long to get a law on the books making it illegal to send children through the mail.

With thanks to Thomas Doty.

Thank heaven we have come a long way from that!  I can only hope that those who did send children through the mail, it was for very short distances.

Ah, I posted the above then did a snopes search and found this:

Oh. My. Word. !!!  I worked nights at the post office to pay my way through college and am happy to report no baby-sightings.

But....if this weren't currently illegal, let's just say the extended fam would be *enjoying* my teenagers right now!!! (and the postman would have to invest in a slightly larger satchel and a good chiropractor).
