Last month the Washington Calligraphers Guild sponsored a field trip to the National Library of Medicine's rare books and early manuscripts history of medicine division located at the National Institute of Health's campus in Bethesda, MD.

We got to see and study several Western European and Arabic medieval manuscripts, plus a letter written and signed by George Washington in 1798.

Below are examples I photographed (with permission) of two of the medieval Western manuscripts:

Here's a link to NIH's website detailing these and the other medieval manuscripts:

Tools & Supplies / New Light Box
« on: September 12, 2017, 02:05:31 PM »
I was getting tired of using my 20+ year old light box that was too boxy (making using it for calligraphy uncomfortable on my hand and wrist) and unevenly lit.  So I decided to get new thin LED one.

After researching different brands and watching many YouTube reviews, I decided on the Cricut Bright Pad.  YouTube review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5hQtqrtX3g  Cricut website:  https://shop.cricut.com/en_us/cricut-brightpad-mint.html.  Very thin with a 9x11.5 inch work area and is dimmable.  At $80 it was in the sweet spot for me for price, features and build quality.

I did buy a clear sheet of 20x24 inch UV filter Cinegel to block most of the UV light from the LEDs.  Trimmed and taped it over the work area.  Not sure if this is needed, but the newer higher end Artograph's do have UV filtering.

So far I'm very happy with the Cricut Bright Pad, very comfortable to use and bright enough where I need to lower the brightness addressing white envelopes with a paper guide sheet in them.

Washington Calligraphers Guild shared this on Facebook.  A clip from a BBC documentary about a Tudor monastery farm and how an artist would have made a paintbrush from a feather for illumination in a book:
