Tools & Supplies / Re: My Favorite Nibs for Pointed Pen
« on: November 01, 2013, 11:56:55 AM »
Hi Sherry!

I also enjoyed using the Brause 66EF! I always like trying new nibs and even going back to ones I used in the past. I find it adds a different dimension to my lettering. And for whatever reason at various points (get it), some nibs are my favorite and then it will switch.  I think it has more to do with my energy and the heaviness or lightness of my hand and the style at the time.

Keep us posted on the new ones you try and which ones you like.

Tools & Supplies / Re: Iron Gall Ink
« on: November 01, 2013, 11:54:08 AM »
Hi Lisa,
I have used McCaffrey's ink (which has an iron gall base) for many years. I absolutely loved it. It is such a smooth ink and produces some beautiful thin hairlines. Perfect if I wanted to keep the shade from lettering but trickier if doing work for reproduction because the hairlines were so fine they could be lost.

However, this last batch I bought, I found it literally ate my nibs up! I mean within just a few sittings my nibs were corroding right on the pen! This had never happened before.

I caught a post on cyberscribes that other people were experiencing the same problem. But I lost my ability to access that email which was on a different computer and I haven't figured out how to add it on my new one yet so I don't know if anyone had solution!

Other than that, I haven't used any other brand.

Hi Sherry,
Welcome to the forum! I am a photographer as well! So we have two things in common. I feel the same way - I often sit for hours doing lettering. It is almost like meditating. I both think and create at the same time but in a very relaxed way ... most of the time!

I look forward to seeing your work on the forum. Please ask any questions and let us know what kinds of things you would like to learn.

P.S. Your photography work is beautiful!

Joy,

These are just beautiful! And your photography skills are stellar as well. Such a romantic feel to these. I will gear the tutorial toward creating finals for printing.

I will also do a quick tutorial on resizing photos for web viewing.  ;) This way you save bandwith, maintain the sharpness of your images, and it makes the full size image easier to view.

Thanks for sharing these! I so admire your work!

Show & Tell / Re: Halloween Pointed Pen Video
« on: October 31, 2013, 11:04:42 AM »
LOL! Yes - I work VERY fast! I had to slow down for this video which was awkward with a camera perched over my shoulder and made for not so great letter forms and a rudimentary flourish. I'm always surprised when I see calligraphers going so slow. If I slow down my letters get shaky. But everyone finds what works best for them.

Yes - it's the Hiro 41. I love that nib for relaxed, contemporary stuff because it produces slightly more rounded end caps and thicker thicks than the Nikkos.

Great observations! You gave me an idea! I'll have to do a comparison sheet of different nibs and share it on the forum!

Hmmm... what month is that? I may have to try to go. I wonder if I could drive there (I have a thing about not flying without my kids!). I was so tempted when I saw the Conference was going to be in TX this year but we are going to be in LA and then touring CA!

Joy, I'm glad you said that... I found it the opposite with the Nikko and Zebra but maybe I mixed them up. I'll have to do a test again.

Lisa, I've never tried that one! I'm going to have to put it on my next order!

Thanks Lisa - it looks way better in real life. And... I used the Martha Stewart glitter! I've had the multi pack just sitting in my treasure chest for so long.

Thanks Ladies! I know it looks like I just wung (is that a word) this off but this was actually hours and hours of work getting it to look the way Pam wanted. And with lots of good feedback as well. At some point I will post a progression of a logo design so people can see how a design is fine tuned and how the progression improves the process.

Show & Tell / Good Witch
« on: October 29, 2013, 09:51:06 PM »
I saw this black ornate oval frame at Michaels last night and grabbed it from the clearance bin for $2. I knew exactly what I was going to do with it.

I lettered various Halloween words in Spencerian for the background. I then drew a witch silhouette. Finally, I lettered "Good Witch" in orange gouche. I worked quickly and while the gouche was still wet, I sprinkled orange glitter on it. I wish you could see how it sparkles in real life!

I'm including a picture of a flat version of the calligraphy so you can see the lettering. This was really fun. I don't make as much time to play as I should so why not start now!

What have you been up to?
