... is the text of a message my sister just sent me.

Then this picture.

Who wants to come visit me in Australia now???  ;D ;D ;D

(I told her there's no need to panic.  Nobody's died from a redback spider bite for like fifty years now.  Mostly you just have crippling pain for months ...)

I am still twitching!

It's okay though. We have a very standard protocol on how to deal with these things.

Holy cow! I am looking all around me now. That is the deadly cousin of the black widow here in America. I would freak out if I saw one inside. Ekkkkk

It's always an adventure!!

Nah it's okay.  They bite a lot of people every year but nobody dies from them any more - as long as you get to the hospital pretty soon, you will be fine.

(mostly they bite people from overseas who might think it's safe to do a silly thing like, I don't know, reach for your towel without shaking it out first ... haha)

(no but seriously if you're on holidays here, shake your shoes out before putting them on if you've left them outside, keep an eye out for crawlies, especially if you're not living in a major city, and don't touch any spiders ... we get heaps of tourists and almost all of them leave in one piece, promise.)

Ah, that's so funny, Prasad ! Reminds of the time I (accidentally) stabbed a fly with my pen... But seriously, I wonder how the British settlers managed to survive in Australia ?!
I'm so glad to live in a land where spiders (and other creatures) are not deadly...

I wonder sometimes! But then I also wonder how they managed to survive in lands where you might die of cold if you sleep outside in winter, or where the animals that kill you are bigger than you are and have teeth and claws. I guess humans are just persistent!
