My 2019 Holiday Card
« on: December 30, 2019, 10:39:59 AM »
I did something a little different for my holiday cards this year. I have been taking a woodworking class and had access to a laser engraver/cutter. My poor teacher had no idea what he was in for!  ;D

I designed this seahorse and went through several trials of figuring out how to do the outline for the cutter. I have problems with spatial reasoning so it was tricky to figure out the positive and negative spaces. But eventually I did! Then the laser wasn't working properly so it took hours and hours to get them cut. And some cut great while others I had to finish with an exacto knife. In some versions, the tiny loops and even some eyeballs were burned off. LOL!

I tried to incorporate snowflakes, holly leaves, and the tail was suggestive of a candy cane (but many of them lost the top loop in the lasering). I put a gold string on the top and backed it with cardstock.

But I am very happy with the final results. All in all, it was about a 40 hour project. But I really enjoyed the learning process and hope to do more in the future.

Thank you for posting the process for your Holiday card. I was wondering if you used a ScanNCut...and now I know you didn't. It was wonderful to see all of the talented work people in the exchange this time around. Everyone is so generous with their artwork and help...I am so grateful to have found this group.
With my first year of hand lettering under my belt, I can only get better.
Santa brought lots of fun new supplies: nibs, inks and a wonderful super thin light box.
Looking forward to practicing lots of 0's in 2020.

@Erica McPhee Oh, that is so pretty!  I don't normally associate sea horses with Christmas, but I also don't live in Florida! :-)  The card is gorgeous & I know that your recipients were grateful to receive it!

Happy New Year 2020!

Janis

Thanks @waterconfidence @JanisTX and @Mary_M ! LOL Janis - that is true. I just love seahorses and living in FL, I like to incorporate beach themes into a lot of what I do. I hoped tying in the snowflakes and holly would make it Christmas-y. I take a bit more free reign with my calligraphy cards vs personal cards.  ;D

Thanks Mary! I adore seahorses. They are graceful and amazing.  :-*
