My writing is nowhere near as good as this, but it is somewhat similar as I press down very hard. After 3 years of writing with nothing but Zebra G’s, I fear my ability to use a light touch has been ruined. From what I’ve read and for morale, I tell myself heavy shading can look nice sometimes, although in reality I’m really learning what most calligraphers strive for is a very light touch.

I understand that all too well. My “go-to” is the Zebra G. But I like to experiment from time to time with other nibs and it helps round out my hand (did you see what I did there?)  :D

Try the Hunt 101 that Ken used for his example above. You will see a world of difference. The skippy-ness of the pen will force you to lighten your touch.  ;)

Thanks Erica. I tried the Hunt 22 and really liked it, but with my heavy flexing it didn’t last long. When I place another order for nibs I’ll be sure to include some 101’s. At the moment I’m pretty happy using Lenny P’s. They are very good quality and once the tines are aligned properly they return to their correct position time and time again even when I overdo it with the shading. I’ve been amazed how long they last, even longer than the Zebra G Titanium’s.

@BrightStar - you are teaching me all kinds of new things! I have not heard of the Lenny’s Ps. So I will definitely look into that.

You may also want to try the Hunt 56. It’s a bit scratchy but more flexible than the 22. :)

Sorry for my terrible pen slang: Leonardt Principal is the proper name for these nibs.

Haha, “Lenny P’s”!  I was wondering, but then I joined Flourish Forum to learn new things; no apology required!  ;D

Apropos of pen slang, I checked myself recently before I’d replied to another recent and beautiful @Ken Fraser offering in the Louis Madarasz style. Was going to say something about that “Maddy” but decided against suggesting I enjoyed anywhere near that level of familiarity.   ::)

At present, my go-to nibs are Leonardt Principal EF : Hunt 101 : and Esterbrook 357 - all excellent and reliable.
