best envelope so far
« on: February 18, 2014, 07:52:49 PM »
i don't know why, but i'm still timid about sharing work.  because i know that it's no where near perfect or professional.  but today i pulled out my very first sheet, day 1 page 1 of basic strokes.  and when i look at how far i have come in about 2 months, well i can say i'm pretty happy with my progress.  i remember how hard it was to go from just learning individual letters to spelling out words and connecting those letters.  and now i can do an entire envelope!
my goal is to address our family holiday cards.  2 months in, 9 more months of practice...

letter connections, spacing, need work, hairlines are still not smooth.

Hooray! Cheering!  ;D

Joi, you have made TERRIFIC progress in a very short time! I love that you shared. And you have a good eye for assessing your work and know what to work on moving forward. Would it be weird if I said I'm proud of you?! You should be proud of yourself!

Bravo!  :D

It's beautiful, Joi! You have a really distinct style that reminds me of old French calligraphy that goes with gorgeous botanical illustrations (which I love!). ❤️

Very pretty lettering!  The recipients will be wowed :). It's great keeping the practice sheets, you've done so well in very little time! :)

Well done!! This shows how good it is to keep everything (or a lot!) you do, especially if you are a beginner...looking back gives you that extra boost, "I CAN DO IT!"
very inspirational  :-*

ok, scratch that envelope, THIS one is the best so far  ;)
look at that gold ink on a navy envelope!  LOVE it!!!
laundry?  nah...the mailman delivered a package from Paper & Ink Arts...i love goodies!  a bottle of dr. martins gold calligraphy ink, The Universal Penman, and finally, a white pencil to draw guidelines on dark paper.  et voila...
not sure i like the crossing of the t's above the ascender, but i wanted to give it a try.
envelope complete...now about that laundry...

and ps - my friend susana is the lucky recipient of my practice envelopes once a week, and it make me so happy that she is so thrilled to receive something pretty in the mail...now if only junk mail was hand lettered maybe we would actually read it!

thank you!
i have been playing with it all afternoon, it's so lovely!
the ink itself i really nice i am quite surprised.  it's very smooth not clumpy like the bleed proof white can be.  i didn't need to dilute it all.  it comes in a bottle with a dropper, so i just put a few squeezes into a dinky dip.  and look at the range of colors it comes in!  the one i have is called copperplate gold.

Great job, Joi!  Your choice of gold on navy paper looks spectacular.  It was many years before I had the nerve to try metallics & now Dr. Martin's copperplate gold is my all time favorite.  Remember to stir it well before using.  If you feel like it needs a little dilution, add 1 or 2 drops of alcohol to your dinky dip.
Enjoy your day!
