Word of the Day / Lagniappe
« on: December 17, 2013, 09:33:07 PM »
I know everybody's super busy (including me!), but here's another word when you get the time.  :)

lagniappe (lan-yap)
noun

1. chiefly southern Louisiana and southeast Texas. A small gift given with a purchase to a customer, by way of compliment or for good measure; bonus.
2. a gratuity or tip.
3. an unexpected or indirect benefit.
4. (and how we define it in New Orleans) - 'a little something extra.'

Where's a good place to get cheap frames that don't look cheap? Haha.

Open Flourish | General Discussion / Christmas Gifts
« on: December 01, 2013, 02:58:16 PM »
Hi all,

I would love to save some money and also practice my lettering this year by making handmade gifts for family and friends for Christmas. I've considered doing just framed quotes, but I'm trying to be more creative and think outside the box a little bit. Does anyone have any ideas for handmade gifts that people have enjoyed in the past? Any inspiration would help!

Tools & Supplies / Paper

Where do y'all order your paper/blank notecards/envelopes/etc? Wondering if anyone has a favorite supplier that they would recommend?

Thanks!

Tools & Supplies / How do you protect your work?
« on: December 01, 2013, 02:30:18 PM »
Just curious what y'all use to protect your addressed envelopes and/or finished, framed pieces... I've been using MicroGlaze on my envelopes, which seems to work pretty well, but I've noticed that with gouache, even one drop of rain can make the ink run if it's touched. Any ideas? And is there anything for finished, framed pieces to protect them from light and fading?

Thanks!

Introductions / Hello!
« on: December 01, 2013, 01:56:05 PM »
Hi everyone! My name's Emily, and I'm so glad to have found this online community for calligraphers. I've recently joined IAMPETH and would really love to attend a convention at some point. I first learned about calligraphy in middle school, and have dabbled in it here and there since then, done some addressing for family & friends, etc... but I'm also a graphic designer (currently freelancing), and I'd like to become proficient enough to add calligraphy as a skillset for my business. I'm mostly self taught, but attended a couple of workshops this past summer and loved them. We're getting ready to move soon (hubby's Air Force), so hopefully I can find more workshops where I'm going. Still trying to find the time to go through some of these online tutorials... and I think I'm signed up for 5 different Skillshare classes!  ;)

All of you are so talented; I've loved seeing your work on Instagram. Please look me up as well, at evfdesigns! Hoping to learn a lot here, as well as make some new friends. :)
