Tools & Supplies / Re: Homemade walnut ink
« on: October 06, 2017, 12:51:32 PM »
Hi!  I made homemade walnut ink yesterday from green fruits from my backyard.  I am happy with it... it writes well.  I put some cloves in it for preservative, but I was wondering if anyone has tried freezing it.
Why would you want to freeze it?

I was worried about mold
I see.
Having boiled the ink for a while, it should be, at least in the beginning, mold free. Take care that your containers are equally clean before use.

Living in a mostly hot, humid environment (Atlanta, GA), I was plagued by mold constantly. Often you will see recommendations to use distilled water when diluting ink, which I did for years. Moldy ink all the time. A couple of years ago, I switched to using simple chlorinated tap water to dilute inks. No more mold. I have a one ounce container I've been using for over a year of McCaffery's Penman's Black that is open every day and which I top off almost daily from a four ounce bottle and occasionally dilute (to counter evaporation) with chlorinated water. No mold in over a year. Perhaps the chlorine is killing the mold or stopping it before it can get going. Something to try if you are diluting ink.

Ooh, very interesting finds...
I usually use distilled water,  but I'll try using chlorinated water instead next time i go mixing ink

I don't know about PenPals but a bunch of Calligraphy and Lettering enthusiasts get together once a month at Future Bistro (483 Bloor St. W.)

This month's meet-up is on the 20th (Wednesday) at 6:00 p.m. Details are on our FB page: facebook.com/TorontoCalligraphyMeetup/ - you might find people wanting to be pen pals :-)

I had an amazing time there yesterday! Thanks so much for the invite; hopefully, i can make it next months!

Find a Pen Pal / Canadian / Toronto Pen Pals
« on: September 17, 2017, 01:01:03 AM »
I have been practicing a bit of Copperplate and Spencerian for a while, and have wanted to maybe have a pen pal or two. Before I commit to anything like this, I was wondering to see if there were any ones in Canada, or specifically Toronto, who would be interested? Preferably in Toronto but doesn't really matter. I just want to get a grasp of who and how many people are available right now, thanks!  :) :)

I started out my Copperplate with the Tachikawa G and the Zebra G and i loved them! Only recently i found and tried out a Hunt 22 i found in my craft case, and i immediately switched over. I've been using the Hunt 22 ever since, butI'm planning on ordering some different ones like the Gillot 303 and Hunt 56 to experiment some more.

Coffee & Nib-bles / Re: Calligraphy confessions

Haha, this is so funny, i think I'll throw in my two cents (even though I'm a bit late lol)

1.Spit. Cleans. Nibs.

2. I lose about half the nibs i buy because of my disorganization (weaps under a rock)

3. I dump ink and premade gouache too many times that i dunt care to count.

4. Calligraphy is expensive and literally all money that does not have to go to food or something important is immediately diverted to the Art Fund ^tm.

5. Horrible posture (so bad, but it's the only way for me lol  :'( )

Thanks for the video!

Just a quick question, would watercolour work in replacement of gouache?
