General How To's & Projects / Re: How to Mix Gouache
« on: December 19, 2014, 11:19:08 AM »
Thanks for the video--super, super helpful! And I use distilled water for Pearl Ex-based ink, but didn't know why I should exactly. Now I know and am glad that I just followed along without question.

So, my question is: can you resurrect really, really old gouache? I found a bunch of old tubes at my parents' house when I was there over Thanksgiving. And being the frugal, not wanting to waste anything--read, cheap--person that I am, I kept them for future use. These are probably almost 10 years old. From the looks of it, most of the tubes are dried out. With a little water and a lot of patience, is it still usable? What do you all think?

Thanks in advance for responses. :)

Hi Kathleen,

Great to have another Pgher on the forum! (I'm from Pgh originally and now based in DC.)  Your work is very nice!

Message me anytime if you'd like to do a letter exchange. I would love to hear your take on how the city has changed over the years.

Take care,
Janice

I love Baskerville; will have to check out Caslon. I find Helvetica to beedging its way into the overuse category too.

I really like Baskerville too. It's a very simple, elegant typeface. If you haven't already seen it, I would recommend checking out Gary Hustwit's film on Helvetica (its origins, popularity, and eventual ubiquity). I think it's available on Netflix. http://www.hustwit.com/category/helvetica/

@Blotbot Thanks for sharing that mug from McSweeney's! Added a nice chuckle to my morning. :)

Hi Denise, welcome! I'm new to the forum too. I'm Filipino-American, parents born and raised in Manila. I'm getting to know forum members and practicing calli through letter exchanges, so PM me if you'd like to be penpals and I'll get the ball rolling. Mabuhay!

Find a Pen Pal / Re: Penpal and Happy Mail Exchange
« on: October 30, 2014, 08:46:35 AM »
Hello all, coming to this thread a bit late... I would love to practice via letter sharing. (As it turns out, I've decided to embark on an insane task of sending a handmade letter out every day. Only because email and texting can really wear you down sometimes, and there's nothing like connecting through old school postal mail!)

What is the best method to share my address? Apologies, I'm still getting to know how to use this forum...

Thank you!!
Janice

I made a list of nib wear factors and comparisons on this blog post: http://openinkstand.tumblr.com/post/78553642755/dear-schin-i-am-so-glad-i-found-your-valuable-and

Dr. Joe Vitolo wrote about it as well: http://www.iampeth.com under the lessons section, getting started, "The Point" PDF.

A method that Michael Sull taught me was to gently run the nib up your thumb. If it starts to catch in your skin, then the metal has gone too sharp and is probably too scratchy for good use.

Just stumbling on to this very useful thread. Thanks for all the useful information!

I noticed that despite all my efforts at fastidiously cleaning my nibs that some are starting to rust a bit. Does that mean I should toss them? Or is their some way to extend their lives a little bit longer? I feel like I haven't been using them that much.

Also, I read somewhere that putting a new nib in flame helps "break it in". Is that true? And do you all do this practice?

Thanks in advance for your answers/suggestions!

Hello Jackie! Just wanted to mention that if you're ever in the DC area, there's a beautiful Persian calligraphy exhibition at the Freer/Sackler worth checking out. As someone still learning, I found it to be very inspirational. http://asia.si.edu/exhibitions/current/nastaliq/

Have fun with your practice!

Cheers,
Janice

Hi Nicole,

I'm new here too, and still acquainting myself to calligraphy after doing it on and off over the years. I understand what you mean about feeling frustrated by the practice, especially when you hold yourself to a higher standard. But I feel that calligraphy practice is all about producing art by hand, and because it's done by hand, there will be imperfections and flaws. And to me, that is precisely what makes the work so special because it's not done by a computer or printer. We each add our own uniqueness to all the letters we make. It's a hard thing to do, but I say, embrace imperfection. Not only does it add character to what we do, it also makes us work even harder.

Let's do our best!

Cheers,
Janice

Introductions / Good morning from Washington, DC!
« on: October 23, 2014, 10:16:35 AM »
Hi all,

My name is Janice. I stumbled upon the forum (which was VERY useful) when I got my first wedding calligraphy job a few months back. Since then, I've been lurking, but decided it's time to come out of the shadows.

Ever since I was a child, I loved handwriting and was constantly changing my penmanship to whatever style appealed to me at the time. I dabbled with broad edge pen calligraphy in the past, but now I mostly do versions of Copperplate and Engrosser's script. I still consider myself a novice and am dedicated to practicing and learning more.

I love sending and receiving postal mail, so if anyone is interested in being pen pals, please feel free to message me. In particular, I'd be happy to do letter exchanges with fellow Filipino enthusiasts. (It's great to see how popular calligraphy is in the Philippines!)

Thank you for having me on the forum! I look forward to sharing and learning from all of you.

All best,
Janice
