Kind Critique / Re: It's not coming easily to me!

Haha! I also love what Erica wrote - especially about being your own worst critic. Remember to give yourself a break.

Once I finally get my lightbox, I'm definitely going to have to try tracing the exemplars... it seems like for some letterforms I really like and want to try and emulate, no matter how many times I draw them, they just don't seem to even come close to what I'm looking at.  :-\

Welcome, Katia! I followed you on Instagram (I'm evfdesigns) - your stuff is great. Can't believe you only just started a couple months ago.  :o  Good luck with your first client!

Hi Ellen! I know it can be frustrating, but if it makes you feel any better, I can definitely see that you're improving.  :)  I agree with Sherry, good paper definitely helps... the Rhodia pads are awesome. You might be putting too much pressure on yourself... maybe take a day or two off now and then, don't look at your stuff, then come back to it with fresh eyes. Sketching letterforms with a pencil first might help you get into the flow a little easier, too. Play around with the consistency of your ink/gouache by adding more or less gum arabic, distilled water, etc. Try taking some big deep breaths before you write, consciously releasing all the tension in your shoulders/neck/arms/hands when you exhale.

I dunno, just some ideas that may or may not work... everybody's different. But definitely just have fun with it!  ;)

I have the same problem with white gouache – either it is too thick and will not flow well, or it blots, or, if it is nice to write with, it dries not opaque enough. I just ordered the very much recommended Dr. Martins Bleed Proof White and that really works great. So for now I have given up regarding white gouache … I also don't have this problem with the only other gouache I have which is Gold Pearl from Schmincke. So this is only my very limited experience!

Have you tried gum arabic? It took a lot of trial and error to get the consistency right, but I just addressed some red envelopes with white gouache, mixed with gum arabic and a little distilled water. You can find it at art supply stores, or or I haven't tried Dr Martin's Bleed Proof White yet, it's on my list...  :)

Very cool, it turned out beautiful!

Thank you, Ellen! We love this word down there - my mom saw this and was so excited because she went to the donut place by her house this morning and ordered a breakfast sandwich... it ended up taking a while, so they gave her a hot fresh glazed donut. She said, 'I just got some lagniappe this morning!'  :)

I know everybody's super busy (including me!), but here's another word when you get the time.  :)

lagniappe (lan-yap)

1. chiefly southern Louisiana and southeast Texas. A small gift given with a purchase to a customer, by way of compliment or for good measure; bonus.
2. a gratuity or tip.
3. an unexpected or indirect benefit.
4. (and how we define it in New Orleans) - 'a little something extra.'

Ok, testing here, too... I was using the website Erica recommended,, which is great - but I already post to Flickr, so this would cut out a step.

Awesome! I'm a fan of the negative space, too.  :)  We were sort of on the same wavelength today...
