Rusty nibs :(
« on: January 07, 2014, 12:59:55 AM »
Sadness. I haven't had much time after Christmas to practice calligraphy, and when I opened my bin (I use a tall tupperware-ish container to keep my inks, nibs, holders together), I noticed that a bunch of my nibs started to get rusty. The Nikko G was fine, but I broke my Brause 66EF nib...

Lesson learned: DON'T keep the lid on the container so tight. And maybe get a desiccant pack for my calligraphy bin.

Wow! :o Do you live in a humid climate, Sherry? It's so dry here in LA that gouache dries almost instantly!

Oh, man!  :(  Do you clean and dry them really well when you're done using them? I live in a very humid climate, but I've only had this problem with nibs I didn't clean and/or dry well enough.

I use a toothbrush to clean them after every use, and a paper towel to dry them. I live in Vancouver. It's not super humid, but it's often rainy.

Hi Sherry,
In class yesterday, my teacher says that he puts those little silicone packets (the ones that come in a new shoe box) in his nib container.  He said it absorbs all the moisture.  And it prevents the nibs from rusting.
Hope that helps you.

Love

I don't know how well it works, because I have not been doing it for long enough to really test it.
The last step when I clean my nibs is, I wipe it dry, then wipe the nib with rubbing alcohol to displace any water.

My favorite for nib storage is using these little desiccant cylinders which come inside pill bottles. They are small enough to go into little divided boxes and absorb moisture.

Wow such great ideas. I was always afraid my cats would get them.
