Christmas Gifts
« on: December 01, 2013, 02:58:16 PM »
Hi all,

I would love to save some money and also practice my lettering this year by making handmade gifts for family and friends for Christmas. I've considered doing just framed quotes, but I'm trying to be more creative and think outside the box a little bit. Does anyone have any ideas for handmade gifts that people have enjoyed in the past? Any inspiration would help!

GREAT topic!  :D I hope other members chime in!

I will take some pictures to share but I am actually on my way to our guild's holiday party right now!

In the past, I have made:

  • notecards with people's names on them
  • library book plates (People love these! Great for kids, too.)
  • card sets with Happy Birthday, Thank You, etc. on the front and blank inside
  • just made paperweights today (I love these!)
  • totebags with lettering using iron-on t-shirt transfers

Are the paper weights totally handmade or do you buy them somewhere and then add calligraphy?

Hi!

Elizabeth, the paperweights were done by hand and then glued to the paperweight. I think I bought the glass via oriental trading company. They aren't great quality (little marks in the glass) but no one complained!  ;D

Bookplates:

Names for Notecards:

One year we bought large jugs of pure Maine maple syrup from BJs, rebottled it, and gave as gifts.

Last year, my grandmother passed away. Everyone in the family loved her two favorite recipes. I confiscated the recipe cards from my mom's recipe box without her knowing. While not calligraphy, you could something similar with your own favorite recipe in calligraphy. I had it made into fabric via www.spoonflower.com. Everyone cried!

Last year, I made homemade vanilla extract for the teacher gifts. So easy! And a really nice gift.

One year I gave my zentangle coasters. If you aren't into zentangle, you could do a couple different calligraphy quotes. Coasters are a great gift because people always need them but never know where to buy them! I had these made via www.shutterfly.com.

I made these for the kids' rooms but another year I did one with a flower image and a quote (can't find the pic). I had these printed through CVS when canvases were 40%. Very inexpensive - makes a beautiful gift! They are very good quality.

I hope that gives you some ideas! Anyone else have any? I'd love to see them!

I think notebooks with people's names (or a fun quote) calligraphy'd on the cover would be a cute gift! But I love all the ideas Erica has given too!

Hi Erica, thanks for all these beautiful and original inspirations!! And great that you have pictures of all these wonderful ideas and designs. I love espacially the Vanilla Extract bottles very sweet ;)!

Bookplates are a cute idea too, I was thinking about these also because I got some jobs to do them for a client the last days, and thought, what a nice gift!

What I did for example in the past (in my pre-digital era, so no pics) is, I bought organic pickles like olives etc., put them in small, pretty glasses, made a nice illustrated label and attached a little handmade booklet with recipes.

Another small job I just did is a book mark (in this case for one special book, colours matching etc.). But this could also be a nice little present. Looks a bit like an oversized gift tag, like this:

I used heavy Fabriano Disegno 5, a beautiful cardboard, and a satin ribbon. I am only not sure how this could be protected because this is something people are (hopefully) going to use.

I'm obviously late to this post but I love the idea and the gifts options. These can really be done for any occasion. I'm glad you posted pictures Erica as I am a visual person and seeing your end results gives me ideas. Creating stamps from a return address is also a good idea. Has anyone done them before? From where?
