Hi Ken, it's reassuring to know that you like this book, as I am using it to start to learn broad pen calligraphy. 

Anasanzi, I've got the "Mastering Calligraphy" version and, going by the preview pages of the other title, they appear to be the same books.  Exactly the same "Contents", "Introduction" and "The Basics 1" pages, including artwork.  Confusing, that!

Yes, thank you for sharing this.  I've been wondering why we can't just use a Zebra G in a fountain pen and not have all of the angst over springing a 14k semi-flex nib. 

Might these be great for flourishing?  I'm new to all of this, but I seem to have read somewhere that oblique pens are not as useful for flourishing, although I don't understand why that would be the case.

Thanks for asking this, zygalski, it's been floating around in my head. 

The answers are helpful, although I have to admit that I catch the nib on the upstrokes if I try to keep writing when I know I should visit the ink bottle.  As a complete newbie to this, it's hard to tell whether I'm catching on upstrokes because the nib is wearing out or (as I suspect) 'cause I'm just not doing it right.

Roseaan - AndyT got it, "Society of Scribes and Illuminators" is what Drogin recommends at p 177.  He also advises to "seek out the nearest regional society."

I'm very much enjoying Drogin's "Medieval Calligraphy", lots of great information, practical advice for the complete novice (he is very specific on how to proceed -- which I need), and written in an engaging style.

Hi Roseann,

Good to know!  I am applying to a program in Boston, so it may make sense for me to join Masscribes, even though I'm in Central Connecticut.  You raise good points, though, I can join more than one guild! 

I'm reading Marc Drogin's book, Medieval Calligraphy, and he recommends joining a UK guild.  Sounds like fun!

Hi Amy, I'm in central Connecticut.  It looks as though the Connecticut guild meets one Wednesday a month, and I have a prior commitment.  I'm also in Mass a lot, so that might work.  It's not like the states are huge, here!

You are helping me already, I don't feel so "all alone in the night" (been re-watching Babylon 5 again  ).

I am heartened to hear that something which feels so unnatural is not universally espoused these days.  I will re-watch Schin's episodes!  She already knows I'm a fan.  Actually, she probably thinks I'm a stalker.

Harvest also.  She provides a very helpful intro video on her website, I'll re-watch that and focus on hand technique.  Although I do think that I lean on the right side of my hand too much, it won't do if/when I get to flourishes, or even the capitals. 

Is anyone here a member of Masscribes?

I am so SO sorry that I missed this class, really need one to get started off correctly.

For example, last night (after reading the Mott book all the way through), I went to practice.  Apparently, my right hands rests on the table all wrong.  In attempting to correct that, I've lost what little control I had over my lettering.  Oh dear.

Has anyone else faced this?  I probably should have put this elsewhere, don't want to divert the thread.

I have asked Harvest if she will do another online intro class soon, but she will be focusing on other courses.  I'll just practice until she holds another intro class.

Andy, thank you for the other link!  Downloaded, now I can do those interesting drills.  I've been watching a Schin video on youtube and she just mentioned how helpful drills are. 

Estefa, I will try again in a few days.  I've joined IAMPETH, so hopefully I've have access to everything after the redesign is finished.     For now, I can start these exercises.  Which I so need.
