Open Flourish | General Discussion / Black paper white ink question
« on: November 30, 2018, 10:10:30 PM »
Hi all, happy holidays to everyone!

When I'm using black paper and white ink I currently use a soapstone pencil to create my guidelines - which never come out equidistant to each other. Any tips? Know of any products (like the Lettermate for instance that I use for addressing envelopes but larger) that can help me quickly create temporary guidelines?

I "may" have resolved this for myself and hope I didn't make anything worse anyway.  I sprayed a bit of WD-40 down inside the flange and that seems to have helped.  Need to be careful with this one - I'm used to having practiced with a plastic oblique pen and can't rinse and swish this metal oblique holder pen the way I did the plastic one.  Yikes!

I am beginning to suspect there may be a bit of rust in my flange.  Anyone have a method to remedy?  It's a carrot oblique holder with a metal fixed flange.

You guys are wonderful.  Thank you so much for your thoughtful responses.  I feel even more motivated now and will take the advice to focus on just one style to try to master first.  There is SO much information online and of course so many pens/nibs/etc that I was feeling quite flooded by it all.  I so appreciate your input and am back to practice now!

Open Flourish | General Discussion / Beginners Rut?

Hi all!  I'm new to the forum and newish to calligraphy as of this year.  I may be suffering from having too much information to have started with because I think I'm in a bit of a learning rut now, if you will.

So far, I have taken a workshop class in person, I've downloaded sample styles of calligraphy workbooks essentially, I've had a 2 hour private lesson, and watched more YouTube calligraphy videos than is reasonably necessary (so hypnotizing!).

So my question is this, is it best that I choose a style and learn those letters through and through in order to advance myself, do I need to maybe create my own exemplar and work off of that?  I can do certain letters in certain style and others in other styles and I don't necessarily think I'm advancing much per se.  Any advice would be much appreciated!

Within the past 6-7 months, I have been learning calligraphy and hand lettering.  I am enjoying it so very much and am looking to challenge myself further by way of this forum.  Thank you for approving me, I look very much forward to the posts and information shares!
