Title: What's your workstation like?
Post by: katianaval on December 29, 2013, 12:49:13 AM
Hi everyone, I'm thinking of setting up my workstation really soon and I'm trying to come up with inspiration. I currently work in a center table with floor pillows--not the most comfortable scene if you're doing hours of calligraphy--as I have not bought a worktable yet. My apartment is so small that I decided on going Japanese-style with my furniture a few years back.

Please post photos if you can :)

I too am thinking about a work area.. other than the kitchen table that is!

Oh, I like this topic! I hope others will post! This is how my studio looked before my oldest took over the room! I then took over part of the living room. It is a disaster right now but when I clean it up a bit, I'll post pics. Same furniture, etc. just different room. Initially I had my lightbox on the right side wing. But now with video taping, I moved it to the long piece. I like it much more as I have room to move around and space on either side for STUFF - which does pile up!

Believe me, it is never this clean! This was just after it was finished! I have a standing workstation (computer) to the left of this workstation.

LOL Linda! That is funny!

I like how you have your station set up. Such easy access to all of your supplies. The shelf is a great idea, too. I am constantly running out of space!

When we're done with calligraphy, you and I could play with your dolls and my dragonfly and seahorse!  ;D

Thank you for posting! I've browsed through craft room photos on Pinterest and most of them I see with white or monotone color scheme too. I guess it helps declutter the view,  expecting a lot of this and that all over. I am envious of the space and shelving that you both have!

Erica, all those draaaaaaaawers... and Linda, I'm super jealous of all your shelving, too. I definitely need more storage...  ::)

Can't post pictures of my office right now, since we're moving and it's just a pile of junk... but I will post in the summer once we're settled.  :)  I bought a fairly cheap desk a while back (mainly just for my desktop/laptop), and I hate it. Hoping to find a new one soon. I have the Futura craft station table, which I like, but if I tilt the table to write, I don't really have any space to place my materials (ink, etc). Hmmm, guess I'll start a Pinterest board.  ;)

I would have thought the light box/lightpads of most calligraphers would be one of the mainstays on their desks. So do you ladies just pull out this lightbox only when you need to do some tracing?
Title: Re: What's your workstation like?
Post by: Linda Y. on January 02, 2014, 02:57:59 AM
I only use the Lightpad when I do envelope addressing & have it stored on a shelf in its sleeve. I also do broad-nib calligraphy that uses a slant board and that takes up most of the desk space. I also sew on that table when time allows. I really need 3 more desks  ;D

I keep my lightbox out at all times now. I just didn't have it out for this picture.  :D It is on *very* rare occasions I don't use a lightbox. Usually, when I am doing a big piece that requires lines.

I'm in the process of combining a calligraphy work area with my office. I have plenty of room with a very large separated work surface and lots of built-in bookshelves, but I've ordered drawer units from Home Decorator's to house the clutter which drives me crazy. I've also ordered fun boxes for paper storage from Paper Source. I should have things finished up next week (providing I don't decide to repaint which is a distinct possibility). I'm excited to share once things get rearranged.

When finally, I had my office at home, my fellow husband found the clue : we've bought a big table (used usually as a diner table: with two glass's plans)
On the first plan (below),I've put inks and all Stuff needed for work and two strips fluorescents. on the top plane (above), I can write. When I need the lightbox, I just have to turn the lights on  : easier makes better ;)
....the table Is not as clean normaly.... It's all the time awfully very busy : so, just for you : empty table for the pics  ;)

I got started today as I wait for my goodies to arrive. I decided I wanted a magnetic wall so while I was at HD, picked up some Rustoleum magnetic primer. Spent the afternoon painting exactly as directed and magnets won't stick! I'm returning the paint but I have another idea I hope to start on tomorrow. Do you all find that you fill each and every horizontal surface no matter how hard you try to keep it clear? I'm hoping a big magnetic wall will help keep things a bit more organized.

I've started a Pinterest board here: http://www.pinterest.com/ewigginton/office-redo/?show_reg=True&invite_code=111b0175aefbd69b4b25b5e731c9e239&e_t_s=link&e_t=a11bdc42c46140d9a31a39794be03cf8&utm_source=sendgrid.com&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=share_conversation_share_conversation_board_share_conversation_board_to_non_user

Same as Erica, I love the drawers, Ellen! Wish these were available in Manila.

Nora, that's a very smart idea to put light under the table! saves space!

Oooh I LOVE this topic!  I'm in temporary digs right now because we're doing renovations on our house, but I'll be sure to document setting up my studio when we move in again!   I'm gathering good ideas...

Nora, I do the same thing with my glass table!

Here we are, exactly two weeks later. I've painted, organized and filed years of paperwork, ordered new covered boxes, added storage drawers, cleaned, made new window treatments, added a magnetic "wall" and lots of other little things to reconfigure my office space. I'm pretty sure I filled my recycling bin about 10 times. Whew! Now, no distractions for me! I thought a long-awaited sunshiney day would help me, but I'm a horrible photographer and just use a point and shoot, but you get the idea. I LOVE my redone space!

I love seeing workspaces! Your's is beautiful, Ellen -- nice and color-coordinated and uncluttered.

I'll share mine, although I'm still getting it optimized for calligraphy. (It's very paper craft oriented right now.) It's a tiny 10x12 loft that is also the home office for both my husband and me.

Aww, thanks everybody. I love to decorate which follows my first love, sewing, which now competes with calligraphy for my time. Thankfully, I play full-time and I like my playground tidy.

Aren't we all so lucky to have the luxury of a special place to work! {Or, play, as the case may be. :-)}

Lori, what did/do you do with paper? I love the green in your space! So organized!

Ellen, I do/did scrapbooking, card making, and stamping. I'll keep scrapbooking because I'm a natural documenter/archiver, but I have way more material than I need. (My ribbon and stamp stashes are not in these photos.) So I'm clearing out some of those supplies to make room for calligraphy supplies. So far my calligraphy supplies don't take up a lot of room, but I'm sure that will change!

Lori, I can SO relate! I was a stamper YEARS ago and actually taught the first scrapbooking class at my local stamp store, which had morphed from a Hallmark. That must have been something like 20 years ago or more. At one time I had my studio in the bonus room above our three-car garage and that thing was PACKED to the rafters with stamps and inks and papers. I've given away or sold a lot of my stuff but still have a fair amount in the attic. It was hard but I actually sold my Magenta stamps on ebay! I loved Magenta! I went to all the shows, conferences, etc. But then someone turned a switch off on me or something and I couldn't bring myself to stamp one more thing. I am determined not to let calligraphy take over like stamping did. I actually opted to redo my office to accommodate this new hobby rather than using a spare room. I already have a HUGE sewing studio and feel like my poor husband's living space is confined to a couple of rooms I "let" him walk through!

Your room looks great with all the organization! Truth be told, behind those two bi-fold doors in my office are reams and reams and reams of paper!

Ellen

LOL! Ellen, I think we are twins separated at birth. I still have all my stamps in a HUGE bin in the garage. I haven't stamped in about 12 years but I can't bring myself to get rid of them. *Someday* I might need them again!  ;D

I managed to take over one side of a small bedroom and the entire closet. Could not live without the flat file from Danica House. Really dating myself with that one. Can't have too much white laminated plywood or too many Ikea white cubbies. A small light table is propped up, plugged in and ready to go.
The Extreme Tree House show is giving me ideas and my husband high blood pressure!  ;) We do have a large backyard.....

oooh i love looking at others workstation arrangements.  in my former life, i designed high end office furniture for Herman Miller...so offices are my thing.
i wish i had a nice clean simple white parsons table desk with neatly appointed accessories.  alas, i have 2 raccoons, uhm, i mean small children that would love nothing less than to explore and then destroy said work area.  so for now i have to keep my work area hidden and put away when not in use at all times.  et voila...my "studio".
it's all i need right now.  the drawer hold my paper and books.  the orange box on top stores my daily practice sheets.

Beautiful! So clean and stylish, with the acrylic chair. And I LOVE your molding and windows! Are you in the US? I'm in the southwestern US - most of what's around here was built after 1950 -- lots of mid-century modern, but I like the style of your house much better. And what a cool job you had!

oh thank you! i'm in the far north suburbs of chicago and the house was built in 1927.  it's a beauty.  parts of the house have been updated, and addition was put on about 10 years ago, and some parts have not changed at all.  and sadly we will be moving in a few months.  bittersweet for sure.  so packing will soon be cutting into my copperplate time!

You are so sweet!  My husband painted my desk.  I hadn't heard Annie Sloan before.  I had to look it up.  The furniture sampled is so pretty and feminine.
Since you like the inkwell, here's a close up for you.  It inspires me and makes me happy just to look at it.  I bought it on e-bay.  They have so many inkwells, I'm sure you'll find something you love too.

My workspace at present can be viewed at the bottom http://custom-lettering.blogspot.com/2014/02/first-composition-for-26-seeds-year-to.html (http://custom-lettering.blogspot.com/2014/02/first-composition-for-26-seeds-year-to.html). It's my digital painting setup. This workspace will eventually evolve as I continue to search for methods to combine both digital and traditional lettering techniques. Sometime soon I need to install some shelves to clear desktop space surrounding the slantboard.

Welcome Alphabetguy! This is a great set up! And your walls - ooh so much eye candy!  ;D I really like your slanted drafting board and how easy it is to access your computer. I have a standing workstation for my computer which is just across the room but I must get up and walk over. This is sometimes good (as I can stretch and not spend too much time sitting). But at other times, inconvenient.

Thank you for sharing and we are thrilled to have you here at the forum!  :)

woahh...congrats!!chantelle!!

as far as my workstations go, it's just my messy dining table (i took over it, since we don't eat dinner there anyway and i like to be in the same room as the husband :) and where i can also see the tv) filled with type books that i've collected thus far (i think i'm a chronic collector - is that a thing? or is this... aka "hoarder"... personally, i think it's different ;) ), a printer, and calligraphy supplies.

The space is a small 15 x 30 one room (now two room) "cabin" built in the 1850's by my family which sits next to my home. There were originally 7 people living in it until and as they constructed the main home. I just completed the renovation this past summer and so nice to have my own space!

My desk is an old school teachers desk I found on Craigslist. Solid oak, deep drawers and built like a tank.

The paper storage to the left I built out of antique doors which were in the barn at my home. Three flat drawers, 3 ink and nib storage drawers and a 12x12 paper filing drawer.

Lastly, which replaces the plastic chest on my desk, is a recently completed project I just built. Built from the same solid walnut door that my paper storage cabinet top is made from. The ultimate penman toolchest! All solid walnut, ink storage top, nib drawer, customized holder storage drawer. 14" wide overall and drawer width allows me to store my 12" holders.

I love seeing all of the different spaces everyone works in! I don't have a permanent space to work in yet, for now I set up a small folding table in our living room once the rest of the family goes to bed. Keeps me from "collecting" too many goodies! ;) One day when RKid moves out on his own I'll convert his room into my studio. ;D

Some of you have really nice setups.

ME, I'm a packrat (I got that from my parents) so my office is so CLUTTERED.
I need to un-clutter so I can get to see my desktop so I can use it.

Gary, I'm a packrat, too. You wouldn't guess it from the pictures of my studio because those were taken before I brought all my stuff in! Now it looks like something exploded in there. And I swear my supplies have babies or my files multiply on their own or something.  :o

Creative people have messier desks, according to studies:  Clean Desk or Messy Desk? (http://www.nydailynews.com/life-style/health/clean-desk-messy-desk-benefits-article-1.1419269)  I don't agree with all of the study's conclusions, though, like people will messy desks being rule-breakers -- I am one of the most dutiful, goody-goody people I know.  ;)

I used to have a messy desk but when I re-did my office I vowed to never let that happen again. I was sick of trying to find an area big enough to work on. So now, I put everything away. I must say I no longer cringe when I walk into the office and feel so much more productive. And, I am a very creative person! I guess one can be cured of this affliction (but don't ask me about my worktable in my sewing room).  ;D

Ellen, I'm impressed! I keep trying to and have good intentions.  :o I think I just do too many things and run out of time. But then I waste so much time searching for things. And I do so many different crafts and have a supply for each. We are moving soon though and I really am going to try to get rid of some stuff!

This topic is inspirational!  (And I love how similar our spaces all look, too - all different, some absolutely stunning, but there's a lot of green cutting mats, IKEA shelving, scattered pens ...)

I'm rehauling mine over this coming long weekend - I'm excited to post photos, too.  It's really just a desk in my bedroom, because I'm very limited for space, but you've all really inspired me.  (And I didn't know about EKBY shelves - but now I crave one!)

Erica, I KNEW IT!!!   :)
I love seeing people's spaces too.  It really is all the same but different.
My office used to be down the hall - I live in a warehouse - and it was truly a formal office but I hated being away from the bustle of the house - we already have an empty nest.  So last year I moved my office into the house part and converted a bedroom into an office.  It's really informal but I love it.

I don't have a separate room to set up a workstation in. I do have a desk in the dining room, which is against a south wall. It's currently fairly covered with art supplies, Bose speakers, fountain pen case, a few odds and ends. I think I'll try to make it workable for practice (just starting to learn Spencerian), and find something portable and cool looking to keep supplies in. One nice thing is that I have wall space to hang exemplars. Bad thing is that there isn't a window nearby for natural light.

I love seeing all of your workspaces. I'm definitely inspired!

Well, I promised a picture, so now that I almost have everything in order - a picture!  Just one.

I live in a very little apartment in the middle of a city, so I don't have a lot of space.  Luckily, what space I do have, I am in sole control of.  Here is my lovely bedroom window workspace!

It was previously two desks, with no storage - so everything that is in those tall cupboards was stacked up on top of a desk, and it looked like a constant disaster zone.  Now everything is tucked away and I have so much more room to move!

And my very favourite part is that I bought a little glass laptop table that can slip out from under the desk, and a clip-on lamp to stick under it:  ta-daaa, lightbox!  It is not perfect, but it's much better than nothing.

Estefa, I absolutely LOVE the line you have set up on the back wall with things pinned to it--I think I just found inspiration for my office space!

P.S. I also happen to LOVE your calligraphy. Work like yours inspires me to keep trying, despite how unimpressed I am with meager progress, because I want nothing more than to produce beautiful calligraphy (like yours) one day.

I have a question for anyone who has figured this out. I looked through these pictures and I did not see a fan. I live in Georgia and it is very hot and humid even still. (Fall). Even with air conditioning I need a fan. Where would be the best place to place it without it blowing all the papers around?

Brad, we have ceiling fans in every room which usually isn't a problem because it is in the middle of the room. But sometimes I have to turn it off when I am working or it blows all the paper. In the summer when it's unbearable in FL, I crank the AC down to the "snow" setting.  ;D

It's so nice to create a little corner to yourself, well mostly to yourself haha. Seems like some have to compete with kids, significant others, and pets, but it's nice to have some control. I just have to worry about my cat so a lot of my things have to be tucked away in ways that don't interest him.

I share a small space with my boyfriend so our bedroom is also our living space and I get this corner all to myself (and Buster Kitten, as you can see, he doesn't care about boundaries). I have to thank my bf for the older antiques stuffs. I have a dream of living in a house that looks like a hobbit hole.

I don't get a lot of natural light so I kinda have to be right under a lamp. This picture also depicts the daily battle between me and my cat over MY chair (he thinks he's gonna win).

Sort of a close up. That glass bubbly thing I bought cheap at an estate sale cuz it was a cool glass bubbly thing. It's now my water holder!

And a close up of the rad gift my boyfriend made for me.

I currently don't have a desk, so I work off of my coffee table, which is probably why I have bad hand positions and a hunched back at the moment, not to mention my hand and wrist hurts after like a page of practice. But it's definitely better than when I used to practice on the floor  :-X

I've never had a dedicated craft space before, because for the most part in the last four years I lived in a dorm and did not in anyway have the space to have more than one maybe two tables to use as deskspace for everything.

But I graduated a few weeks ago and moved into a new apartment and so now I have my first dedicated craft space, and just really wanted to share.

I love looking at everyone's workstations!!

This is mine...lots of Ikea, need a bulletin board (washi tape does not cut it), posed Buddy (we're working on "stay"), and it's never this clean!  ;)

Neat! I'm in serious need of drawers. My workspace is an absolute mess. But I too have, usually, the company of my dog.:-)

My space(s) are a bit different since I mainly write letters and don't often try real calligraphy.

My most settled workspace is actually at work. I have an office and a side desk that I've been able to turn into a space to so some calligraphy and write letters, or just play around. You can see a few of the nibs I'm currently using, and the various inks and even my Parker 51 desk pen in the background. What the picture doesn't show is the stack of "in-box" paper trays to the right with the various papers in them.

But most of my writing happens when I'm out and about. I need to carry my workstation with me because most of my free time is while I'm waiting around in a coffee shop or someplace either for my son who's in a class, or my wife who's teaching. So, I've created a neat satchel of materials that allows me to take my workspace pretty much anywhere with a table and chair. The "man-bag" carries my iPad in the front, and inside I have large white envelopes with different papers, a small case with various nibs and holders, and in the zippered pocket in the back I have four 2-oz bottles of ink in a sealed plastic container. One of the envelopes contains guides, postcards and stamps.

With this set-up, I can write a letter pretty much anywhere with my dip pens, even my dining table which is where I work at home. I've ordered a few extra Dinky Dips as the current bottles I carry are only good for writing with a straight holder. I'm probably going to replace one of the bottles with a couple of Dinky Dips for when I want to use an oblique holder and practice my calligraphy.

Well, those are my workstations.

New furniture!  So happy to now be able to adjust the height on both the table & the chair.

Bought a drafting table years ago from an architectural firm that had converted to Auto CAD.  Writing slope made from a piece of cabinet grade 3/4" plywood that didn't cost anything as it was in the scrap wood pile at Home Depot.

Thinking of having my calligraphy space in my "woman cave"--in the laundry room where I would have a sink handy and also have my computer, printer, and storage pieces.  Good idea or not?

I have 2 spaces -- one in the basement near the sink, etc., and one upstairs at a desk. I tend to prefer the upstairs one for the light and atmosphere and use the downstairs one when I'm doing messier stuff like painting.

The laundry room sounds good, I particularly like the idea of having a sink handy. But will the actual laundry be in there too?? I can't imagine the noise and shaking from the dryer/washer (mine causes earthquakes!) and argh, imagine accidentally spilling sumi ink on a basket of fresh laundry argh arghhhh arghh

Something to think about, though in my household laundry is completed in a half day one day a week.  The lint generated from the dryer may be an issue.  The rest of the week will be using computer, printer, tv while I work on crafts and calligraphy.

I would be worried about the humidity from the dryer affecting the paper - unless you have good ventilation! (My last house definitely did NOT, and nothing stayed dry in that laundry, ever.)

The lint would be a problem for the computer, too - you could collect a lot of vent filth very fast in that kind of environment.

I am fortunate to have a dedicated space.  My work room/office used to be part of a 1st floor bedroom.  Real nice for me, since the former owners had a wet bar in their bedroom!  This is about as cleaned up as it gets.  On the opposite wall that you can't see, I have a giant stand-up light table that I bought from my daughter's wedding photographer in 2009, used it once & now it just holds files.   ;)  Believe it or not, I'm most excited about how I rigged up an outlet strip with velcro underneath my work table & strung power cords through large paper clips that are attached to the edge of the table.  Yeah....it's the little things!!

I set up a small workstation in the corner of my office just for calligraphy (and also as a place to stack books on, because I don't have a piece of furniture without a bookstack on it). I'm using an old desk that belonged to my husband's grandmother, which I plan to restore someday. It makes me feel like a scholarly penman, which is a lovely bonus.

I have an L-shaped desk at work. One side holds the computer, one side holds my writing supplies.

I think it's gotten a little out of control.

Andrew, your glasses are amazing! I love it when calligraphers lay their glasses down with their work. Perhaps a future off-topic thread? O-O

Btw, the way you store your nibs is interesting. What's going on there?

I'm assuming you're not talking about the nibs just scattered across the desk.   ::)

The ones that seem to be just hanging on the edge are on a little homemade nib holder I cobbled together. It's basically a strip of wood with a bevel to which I glued a fairly strong magnetic strip. (most of the sheet magnets you get at the hobby stores are too weak) I then just covered it in paper and it holds my nibs quite well. I keep thinking one of these days I'll make a nicer version. It needs to be a bit wider at the base to make it more stable, or have a base at all might help. I'm thinking a strip of steel with a series of small magnets behind might work well. It's a great idea, I just need to make the next step past my improvised prototype. And I'd need one 15 feet long for all the nibs I have hanging out. (multi-tier?)

The glasses are some reading glasses I bought and really like, but my wife hates them. So they're at work.  :)  The big lenses actually work really well for writing and calligraphy because there're no frame lines in your vision.

A knife holder would be a similar idea.

I was wondering, have any of your nibs been magnetized, having been on the holder a while? If so, might that affect ink flow when using iron gall ink?

Post by: AAAndrew on April 13, 2016, 12:25:25 PM
I've thought about how to make a much smaller version of those. It's what gave me the idea.

The magnet doesn't seem to have affected ink flow. I suspect the iron particles in the ink are far too small to be affected. I do have a few nibs that seem to become somewhat magnetized, but that only is an issue when I try and sort them from other nibs.

I have this old writing desk which became a repository for all my random junk and decided to clean it out and use it for its original function. I'll use it for practice and smaller projects. When I need more space I'll break out the drafting table.

@AnasaziWrites -- thanks for your suggestion to re-invigorate this topic!
@Ivan R -- maybe seeing how others arrange their workspace in this thread will give you other ideas for storage solutions.

Here's my snug little workroom.  I can reach almost everything I need from my table - which is an old, retro photo drafting table, with an integrated light box top, that I can adjust the angle of too. I like to work at an angle for broad edge, but I can put it flat for pointed pen or illustration work.  To the left, you can see my ink cabinet, which is a lovely piece of woodworking that a friend made for me in exchange for a calligraphy piece, and the string I clip pieces to while they are drying.  Papers and card stock and reference books are in the shelving below the sideboard.  The little space itself is a sunroom with glorious natural lighting, and it has a big radiator in it, so it stays warm enough in the winter (which, yes, that's snow outside - it's been snowing for three days now; we got about 5 inches yesterday - 20 Oct 2020).
