Welcome and congratulations on your imminent addition to the family!

I'm in the same spot...I'm currently just practicing the basics and developing a bit of my own style, and waiting to take a workshop! I feel like that'll really boost me to my next level.

Happy inking!

Thank you, Erica! I've printed out all of the worksheets and I do letter warm ups with the videos before all my writing sessions!
I love the oblique, my upstrokes are much much smoother. I've really gotten used to my Hunt 101, which feels great! After researching the other nibs here in the forum, I got a Hiro 41 in spite of all the issues to see if I could make it work.  It turns out that I have the opposite problem y'all had - rather than letting out blobs,  the tines  are splitting empty even though the nib is full and the ink is sticking!
I'm going to keep trying to break it in though :-P
thank you again, can't wait to keep playing and learning with everyone!

Hi Everyone,
Thank you so much for your guidance! You've made me feel so much better, I thought I was doing something that was causing it but it sounds like once I improve my touch and with the style of the nib, it all will make more sense!

Andy - yes, it took me some time to get used to, but it's really a very useful ruler!

It was, in fact, all my store had as far as the right style nib, so I'm looking forward to ordering some different nibs and hopefully will improve from there - developing a lighter hand is definitely on my list of things to work on right away.

Thanks again, all!
Happy inking!

Thanks so much, Gary!
I tried to get a good photo below - I'm definitely working on lightening my hand, I know that is a huge part of the problem - and I think I'm improving on that front, so good news :) I'm using Bienfang 100% rag, as I was advised that the cotton comp was best and that was what was on my supply list (side note: my workshop has been delayed so some of my questions are a bit premature in my learning process!)

Apologies for my poor technique, and the glare, and the picture quality...my nerves make me a bit shaky.

Hi All,
I'm sure that there have been problems reported like this before, but I'm having a problem and I'm not sure the cause.

I'm using a Hunt 101, with Higgins Eternal, and the nib hasn't been holding ink very well and has been catching (it's a couple weeks old). So I busted out the new Hunt 101, cleaned it so I was getting no blobs or oily looking ink, dipping (and it looks like it's sticking!), and yet I'm not really even making it through a whole word!

Does anyone by chance have any insight in what I might be doing wrong?
Full disclosure, I'm a bit heavy handed and on some words, I can tell I'm letting out way too much on my downstroke, but even when i'm very careful, I'm not getting very far!

Thanks in advance everyone!
Hillary

Hooray for newbies and Californians!

I'm a newbie too - went to school up north and I miss the bay area terribly!

Hi there,
I joined right in, and realized that I never introduced myself! I'm Hillary from Southern California. I grew up here in the San Fernando Valley, and now I call Hollywood (area) my home. I went to school in Northern California at UC Davis, where I was a Film Major, and got my graduate degree at USC in Entertainment Management.
By day, I'm a studio corporate cube dweller, working in online marketing for motion pictures. By night, I'm an avid hockey fan, musical theater junkie, and puppy cuddler extraordinaire.

I've always been very interested in writing and lettering - from the start, I've always written in cursive and have loved to look at beautiful lettering, or even my class notes that were particularly neat and pretty! I can't draw images very well, so my doodling has always consisted of mostly words and letters.
I'm just getting started (in fact, my first oblique holder should be in my mailbox any minute now!), and all inspiration and constructive critique is more than welcome!

Thanks for making me feel so welcome and for everyone's kind and encouraging support - can't wait to be a part of the community!

Yikes!! Sounds worse than my ever-present papercuts!

I guess (hopefully), I will know if it's happening to me! So far I think I've been okay (fingers crossed).

EDIT: 2 hours later ::
Of course, I jinxed myself! It happened to me all night with my Hunt 101...downstroke, *splatter, downstroke, *splatter. I think I'm a bit heavy handed, and I'm definitely gripping my pen a bit.
:-\

Hi there friends,
I've been reading lots of your lovely posts/advice and I keep seeing mentions of nips that 'snag'. What exactly does this mean? Is it anything to do with the paper as well?

Thanks all!
Hillary

Such fantastic examples!

Thank you Erica!

Thank you both for your kind welcome!
I have been looking into the guild for a few weeks and that is my next "to do" item!
I believe some of the classes at OTIS are also taught by DeAnn Singh, so I hopefully will get into one of her classes!
I've been practicing in pointed pen nirvana with my pencil as well as my fountain pen, but I don't quite have the right nib on it so my release is not so much a release as a calculated attempt to make it look like one!

Thank you again, I'm so happy to have this resource, everyone is so amazing!
