Flourish Forum News / Re: Is it Really Free?
« on: February 05, 2024, 02:54:42 AM »
Returning to the forum after a hiatus, your heartfelt post was the first thing that greeted me Erica, and it touched my soul!
As you've navigated through joy, heartache, and unforeseen challenges, your resilience shines through.

This space has always been a haven where enthusiasts like me, wrestling with time constraints, congregated, learnt, and shared in the enchantment of letters. And should the day come when this space transitions to a paid model, I believe, many would pay without thinking twice.

Thank you for creating a haven that feels like a comforting embrace, even after prolonged absence. Here's to wishing you a future filled with warmth, continued growth, and the same generosity that has touched our hearts and to the heartfelt and thriving future of Calligraphy Land!

This was super fun. I scored 93!

@Estefa The first one is definitely debatable. Even though i managed to get 85 there, I'm not sure what I did was right!!  ::)

@Erica McPhee @nabeelah @sheila247 @Nickkih I got your lovely recipe cards. Such a treat - to the eyes and i'm sure to the tummy as well!!

I sent mine a bit late so will post here once you all get it.

Kind Critique / Re: Please RIGHT if I'm WRONG - Spencerian

@Garima, @AndyT, for me, currently, learning to write is learning to feel. This is why I do drills myself, and this is also what transfers reasonably well to my actual writing. The results of the drills themselves usually look hopeless, but at this stage of my development I find this to be less important.

Thank you for the wonderful live session yesterday! I did the drills after the session and can totally relate to why you promote them. Too early for me to comment still but i get the point.

There's a fun thread here for drill refuseniks, where I laid my cards on the table.  :)

@AndyT The thread has helped me conclude that i should do what pleases me! :D I was actually mighty confused about the significance of perfectly shaped drills! I like doing a bit of it everyday so until i figure out what difference it does/does not make, i'll keep at it!

@When you consider taking on a certain drill, make sure you know what purpose it serves, and what it exactly aims to develop.

@Rednaxela THIS is what i wanted to know when i asked that question at the beginning of the thread - the purpose of a specific drill! I have been following Marcus since a long time now and HIS precision is what scared me but i've made my peace with it now. Will learn why/why not on the go! :)

I will definitely consider buying "The Universal Penman" by George Bickham soon. :D
-Ashok

Actually i could have got it today for you to see. You'll find a lot of examples of the open flourishes i was talking about today, in this book. It definitely is worth buying!

@AndyT I do warm up everyday before i sit down to write. Having learnt a bit of engrosser's, I'm now keen to learn business penmanship which to me looks quite close to Spencerian. I actually was curious to know to whether the precision with which Madarasz and his fellow penmen, do the drills, is an absolute must to be good at spence. Rows and rows of absolutely similar looking ovals scared me in the beginning but I think i get the point you're trying to make here.

I've already been following everyone you've mentioned on the thread except Jacob Ira Vijandre and they've all been a great help!

@ash0kgiri I might be hijacking your thread once in a while  ;)

Here I am just gasping and you've moved on to another script!! This is awesome @ash0kgiri, let's learn together as planned!  :)

@AndyT I'll be following along! And before i begin, how important are movement exercises in learning spencerian? Is the usage overemphasized?
