Hello! It's been a while since I posted. I hope you're all well. So, I'm heading home to Oz in June/July 2020 and I would be very interested to know about calligraphy events around the country while I'm there. Can anyone point me in the direction of some key events / workshops that might be on during that time. Thanks, Kate.

Well, why not, eh Scarlet! Thanks for the reminder about that option. Obvs doesn't work with the flexible colour requirement, but if something's gotta give, something's gotta give!

Thanks so much, Jean — wise words as ever. It has been at the back of my mind that this is something that just won't work. I would so love to do the event but I must be realistic. I've had a couple of suggestions over on IG — embossing and alcohol ink, which I'll try, but am prepared to let the client know that the materials are just not going to allow it. Thanks for the gentle reminder not to try and achieve something that may very well be impossible! I will give it a red hot go, but that's about all I can do.  I will let you know how it goes.

Hi all

I'm just doing some research into calligraphing onto moleskin cover, and with a little testing can see that neither acrylic or Dr PH Martin's Bleed Proof are likely to make the grade. I've learned that the covers are made from oil-cloth (in the vinyl family)? So wondering whether I'd need to use a paint that was oil based or specific for vinyl? Appreciate any advice you have from experience (or otherwise that you think worth testing).

I can't use a pen because it will need to be a specifically mixed colour, so would be using nib or paint brush, I think. But it has to be quick drying as it's to be done at an event. Is this possible?

Thanks!
Kate

They look great!  What acrylic did you use in the end?

Mel, I just realised it was you who recommended the Artiste paint to me. Thank you -- I wouldn't have even known where to start so must give a massive shout out to you!

Thank you, Janis (and Melanie---didn't say it before)! I'm still very nervous about my client work — very critical (which in many ways is a good thing, but stressful!) so really appreciate your kind feedback.

Hi Melanie
I went with Artiste metallic acrylic (classic gold) craft paint diluted with water and then varnished with Vallejo Acrylic Gloss spray varnish.

Also tried the acrylic out on black paper (Frisk 135g black pad) while I had it. You can see the vid on Instagram.

Cheers

Quick update. I read somewhere that you really need to make sure you give the can the full minute shake it recommends, so I did that and was able to get a cleaner finish. Have done them all now, and while some have still got little spots, I don't think that they're noticeable as the stone themselves have a lot going on. I will post a pic once all is dry and done!

Hi again!

So I went with the acrylic without sealing and for the most part it's been fine. Just some issues with breaks in the surface, and getting the right consistency. It rubs off easily with water so am keen to seal them. I had planned to use a spray gloss varnish.

I've tested the spray varnish on a few of the stones and every time it seems to created tiny air bubbles in places under the surface. Have you ever had this issue (perhaps I'm just doing it wrong?), and any thoughts on alternatives?

Thanks

Thanks, Gary

Yes, she's going to drop some over this weekend. I agree with your point about the colour combo, and that they have to see it to believe it. I've attached a pic of the stone for reference. What would you suggest for sealing if necessary? Something like Mod Podge, or a decoupage sealer?
Thanks

Oh man. I'm a digital marketer by trade and have been actively avoiding this (help help not another channel) -- burying my head in the sand while on mat leave. Can't think of a better reason to join in now that I know what's going on. Folks, dare I say it, I'm @oliveandreid on Periscope.

Thanks, Melanie Jane! I worry the pen might have more control over what happens than I do, but I had a look at that Artiste acrylic ink, too. I got in touch with a local supplier for advice, thinking it could be a good option, but they actually suggested Liquid Leaf gilding paint (either with brush or nib). Might try both on the sample. Just want to work out with either that I can erase in someway if I make a mistake. I don't think I'm going to have any 'extras' to play with.

Hi everyone!  I've been asked to calligraph names on Agate stone slices. not sure about the tools/medium to choose, and would appreciate any thoughts for this non traditional request. I'm thinking either glass paint -- directly out of one of the bottles with a thin tip dispenser (sorry that's a really unhelpful description),  or oil paint and paint brush. Any experience with writing on stone like this? The request is for gold colour names, but the stone is bright pink and blue so it might get lost.

Thanks!
