Some of us were recently lamenting over on Instagram the lack of availability of oblique holders in the UK. I have a speedball, but would love to try my hand with a classic oblique holder. Coincidentally, I received an email from Scribblers yesterday announcing they'd teamed up with The Yoke Pen Company in the US to supply a classic oblique holder.

So, for those looking to source an oblique holder a little closer to home, it might just fit the bill.

Cheers

Hi Lyndsay
Just playing around with my LinkedIn profile, and see that you can drag around the order of skills so that you can force skills with lower endorsements higher in the list. You just need to edit your profile, edit your skills section, and then there's a little grey bit just above 'save' that says 'drag to reorder'. Hope that helps.

How great, Natascha! Also, I'll be in Vienna for Eurovision next year, so maybe we do some calligraphy together, eh!? x

I'm still trying to find a local store in London. Tried three from their stockist list so far... the search continues.

Tools & Supplies / Re: Where to get calligraphy supplies in London?
« on: October 01, 2014, 02:21:45 AM »
Hi SueL

I recommend L. Cornellisen & Son near the British Museum, and the London Graphics Centre in Covent Garden. I also visit my local Partridges store at Clapham Junction, and they're great.

Is there something specific you're looking for? I'm collating supplies/resources/events on my blog, Olive & Reid which will hopefully help you.

Do you live in London? I'm aiming to organise some meetups with local calligraphers — nothing too formal — and it would be great if you'd like to come.

Coffee & Nib-bles / Re: Finding Pretty Postage Stamps
« on: September 10, 2014, 07:22:09 AM »
I've started the search for more interesting stamps in the UK. I don't think it's going to be easy. I did use the Royal Mail's 'Smilers' service for our wedding invites, but it's not quite the same.

I'm interested to find out where I can get either vintage stamps, or custom designed stamps that meet the UK postage requirements, so if anyone knows of anything, please let me know!

Coffee & Nib-bles / Re: The bad stuff: hand pain!

Sorry to hear that, Moya. I've always wondered whether I would suffer any ill effects from calligraphy like this, and really appreciate the tips others have shared with you. I hope they help! For my part, I also wanted to share a recent issue that's come up.

Five years ago, when working in a job that required some repetitive lifting above my head, I suffered severe shoulder bursitis (required a cortisone injection) in both shoulders. I haven't really had any problems with it since, until I recently finished a batch of calligraphed envelopes. There are a couple of factors at play, but this is one recent variable that seems to have been the trigger. It makes me a bit sad that calligraphy could be the cause of my shoulder pain, but fortunately I've found some shoulder strengthening exercises (and applying ice) that are designed to prevent this problem. Sounds like from Estefa and WJTury's comments that this strengthening and warm ups are important for hands and fingers, too. Think I'll try (but I'm pretty bad at sticking to these kinds of things) add that to my list of strengthening exercises.

Tools & Supplies / Re: Can you make gouache shinier?
« on: September 04, 2014, 02:20:48 AM »
I recently added Winsor & Newton "silver" goauche to Schmincke Horadam "neutral grey" and "white", and it gave it a little shine. I've posted a pic of it in another thread, so sorry for the double (triple!?) ups.

Thanks, @estefa, for the Ziller tip. I've seen them before on Blots, but have been working through so many others that I was avoiding buying new ones. It's next on the list. :)

Coffee & Nib-bles / Re: A Sharing: I use the word "Ate" a lot

Oh so relieved to know what Ate means. I see it so much on IG and just look at it really hard thinking divine inspiration will shed a light on me. I should have known it would be the Forum, instead, that guided the way. :)

Uh oh! I'm gonna be in big trouble in paper paradise. Just checked the UK offering. :) I'm also signed up for the Handmade Fair in Sep, where I'll be doing a master course in gift wrapping. Looks like Ikea and I are set to become much better acquainted. EGADS!

The mags have some London stockists and elsewhere in the UK. I wrote a blog post about the London stockists, and there is a list on their website for other UK locations. Looking forward to getting this upcoming issue.
