Sun 2/14 from 11:30am-1:30pm: Work-in-progress classroom walkthrough/open house. This is your chance to check out what everyone's been working on in each of the 10 classes at the conference!

Sun 2/14 from 6pm-9pm: Dinner/Lecture/Live Auction – you're welcome to pay at the door and join us for the dinner buffet or come afterwards for Washington calligrapher & 2016 faculty member Suzanne Moore's lecture & slideshow around 7:30pm. Suzanne is one of two American artists who worked on the St. John's Bible with Donald Jackson, the Queen's calligrapher.

Fascinating yet sad at the same time, since this beautiful cursive is no longer being taught in U.S. schools.

Open Flourish | General Discussion / Stationery vs. Stationary
« on: May 20, 2015, 11:27:15 AM »
This has been on my mind for sometime. I see many many calligraphers, even many well-established ones, making this common mistake, and I thought we as calligraphers/calligraphy-/ writing- enthusiasts should all know how these words are different and how they are spelled, especially as we communicate.

If you look at sites such as the very popular Oh So Beautiful Paper, they even say this on their submissions page:
"Any submission that incorrectly spells the word stationery will be automatically rejected."

stationery
Syllabification: sta·tion·er·y
Pronunciation: /ˈstāSHəˌnerē/

noun

1 Writing paper, especially with matching envelopes.
1.1 Writing and other office materials.

stationary

Syllabification: sta·tion·ar·y
Pronunciation: /ˈstāSHəˌnerē/
Definition of stationary in English:

adjective

1 Not moving or not intended to be moved.

So I've been into this calligraphy thing for a while now (my first "formal training" class anniversary is coming up on No. 4 this September), and I'd really like to know:

What do you want to accomplish with your calligraphy skills? Do you want to be a professional calligrapher, making it into a full-time job? A calligraphy teacher? the next Molly Thorpe? The next Master Penman? Or are you just content with the process of learning, practicing and progressing?

And for those of you who are already doing what you want to do - did you think you were going to be where you are, the first time you picked up a calligraphy pen?

Would love to hear everyone's thoughts.

Just wanted to share that some Flourish Forum members are participating in County of Los Angeles Library's social media campaign to celebrate  National Library Week! Seven quotes about the importance of reading/libraries were chosen and calligraphed, and one quote is posted each day of the week.

Those who are participating: Roseann, Heebs, joi, David/masgrimes, Nickki/Nickkih, Joy/imaginejoy and myself.

Follow the County of Los Angeles Public Library as we celebrate National Library Week with calligraphy!  :)

Workshops & Conference News / Letters California Style 2015
« on: February 15, 2015, 01:05:13 AM »
Just wanted to say that I am in the middle (day 2) of Letters California Style here in Los Angeles (Pomona, CA to be precise) and it's been an incredible experience so far.

This is my first full conference (last year I only attended a mini workshop at night), and it's such a wonderful feeling to be in a place where all 100+ attendees are just as crazy about calligraphy as you are. The classes are small (only 12 students per teacher!) and we all get the fullest attention and critique from teachers. My class was "Journey into Contemporary Pointed Pen" with Jane Shibata who is just an amazing calligrapher and a wonderful teacher. The class material is based on Mike Kecseg's Pointed Pen Variations. I did Blackletter and Uncial with Pointed Pen for the first time today!

Paper & Ink Arts set up shop for the duration of the conference so we were able to shop (ALL the Cocoiro pens!), and those of us who ordered class supplies in advance got 10% off, no shipping and no sales tax.

There is a great sense of camaraderie. Everyone smiles and says hi and asks "what class are you taking?" There is just so much warmth from everyone. Tonight there was a special calligraphy art performance where Peter Thornton, Pamela Paulsrud, Ewan Clayton, and Yukimi Annand (my teacher, yay!) collaborated on two art pieces together and it was INCREDIBLE.

Pics are in my Instagram so I won't spam them here. There are 2 more days left of the conference and I already know I'll be a little sad when it's over. I strongly recommend those who can attend conferences to just go go go, and experience the calligraphy joy.
