Open Flourish | General Discussion / Re: Pricking guidelines

Interesting... I can't speak to the type of pricking you seem to be describing, but in the Renaissance (and very probably earlier), artists would prick through their draft, then lay it on the final surface and basically use a pounce powder technique to transfer the design.  There are several existing cartoons by da Vinci and others in which the holes can be seen.

Can you describe Johnson's process a bit further?

@KristinT
Well, I have a few banjo picks lying around  from my banjo playing days and gave it a try. I had to reverse the curve of the pick from upwards to down to better conform to the nib which wasn't so easy, as the pick is made from stern stuff, but managed it after a bit, and used metal cement to join the Spencerian #1 nib to the pick. Replacement of the nib isn't going to be easy (I tried silicone, but it did not adhere strongly enough), but that won't be necessary, as I'll not use it much, if ever. The results speak for themselves. The lines are just not smooth, as the finger could not be held rigid enough (at least, I couldn't). Ill be sticking with a regular pen. It was a fun experiment, though.

@AnasaziWrites , that's a wonderful experiment!  A banjo pick is exactly what I was thinking (do you no longer play?) as an option for testing this.  Fun to see the results!  I imagine the original product offered similar difficulties.   :)

Thanks for the update, Cat!  Lettering guides like this are such helpful tools; it's nice to know what's out there and from whence they can be acquired!

I've spent very little time in the UK, so sadly can't contribute to answering your question.  Just wanted to pop in and say congratulations!  It's so cool that you've found some lost family, and get to take an amazing trip to meet them too.  Happy for you!    ;D

I'm not sure how well this might work. You'd have to really be used to "finger-forward" position, and since your finger is not as rigid as a holder, I suspect it would get fairly sore after a bit. Your muscles would have to serve to keep the finger supported.

Thanks for sharing!

I quite agree, I can't imagine it would be comfortable for long passages.  Maybe just for quick notes, or occasionally needing to pen a signature?

WOW. That's so crazy to even imagine using my index finger as a pen itself.. I wonder if anyone on this forum has one of these in real life in their personal collection? It'll be so cool to see! :o

It would be neat to see!  If anyone really wanted to try it, I bet a banjo fingerpick could be adapted with not too much trouble.  Maybe a piece of brass, some glue, and wire to hold the nib?

I was doing some light research and came across something I don't think I've seen before: finger pens!

Advertised in 1888, apparently.  Not sure the image indicates an option for attaching an ink cartridge, which is mentioned as an option.  What fun!

I only did a quick search here on the forum, so apologies if this is a repeat.

What a delightful exemplar, @Erica McPhee !  I really like how you've labelled the guidelines, too.  I will definitely be printing this out to keep at my desk for reference.  Separately, may I ask what blue ink you are using (maybe McCaffery's?)?  It's quite a lovely shade!

Welcome to the forum, Martin!  I think a lot of us can relate to a lack of satisfaction in what we achieve, but we're also working in a medium that has arguably very strict considerations for "proper" execution.  It's always a bit easier to see our errors with each piece, but it takes a longer period to see improvement.

Regardless, you'll find a lot of support here, in whatever style you're inclined!  Everyone is quite positive and super helpful.   :)

@evad and @Erica McPhee - Thank you for your kind words!  They mean a lot to me.  I dearly enjoy making these cards and, selfishly, just hope the recipients enjoy them at least half so much as I did in drawing them.   :P

What is this, Yule in August?!  Actually, it's been on my list to be working on this year's card for the last two months.... no comment on how successful I've been.  I love seeing what other folks do, it's really nice inspiration!

I really enjoy designing cards and would love to sell them one day, too.  Here are my last two designs.  I don't always incorporate calligraphy into the card itself, but I've been enjoying utilizing it for the envelopes.  Sorry about the poor lighting and generally fuzzy photos.

I have most of mine in old stationery set boxes, which are a great size for keeping miscellaneous envelopes together, but still fits within drawers well.  Short of those, my first thought was to just use some ribbon to tie bundles together.  Rubber bands are tempting to suggest, but the way they dry out and fall apart or snap is pretty unappealing.  You could use binder clips, but they might scar the envelopes.  So... ribbon or string seems like a pretty straightforward and cheap solution.

Hi Matt!  Welcome to the forum.  :)  Good for you getting started on new things!  Some colored inks really can be tricky.  You'll find plenty of good advice and helpful insight here.  I am a big fan of Higgins Eternal myself, though I know some don't care for it too much.  Which nibs are you enjoying most so far?
