I should add (some context for those not in my group), I'm a Filipino-American living in D.C. In honor of Philippines Independence Day, the Embassy of the Philippines in D.C. held a gala event honoring the fashion designer Patis Tesoro and her work championing the piña cloth as a national and cultural symbol of the country. I attended her lecture where she spoke about the painstaking process of extracting the fibers to make this prized cloth. I was so blown away by the artisanal and completely handmade tradition of the cloth, that I felt compelled to share.
