Post by: Erica McPhee on February 14, 2015, 01:27:40 PM
I'm still learning how to do this but I thought it would be fun to share a video of my Valentine Exchange.  :-*

Very nice!  How did you make the "L"?  It looks to me like you broke a few rules...

Sorry about that! I fixed the video. YouTube didn't want to cooperate today.  ;)

Thanks Ellen! Yes, the L was made "backwards" - in reverse order.  ;D

Thanks Sarah! It's so hard to capture the gold. Plus I video'd this at night when I was working on them so the whole thing is yellow. But thank you for your kind words!  ;D

Now I am re-thinking joining the exchanges :P

One question Erica - The video is 1:40 long.  How long does that actually take you to do?

That was beautifully done Erica.

While I wasn't originally a "fan" of flourisings like that, they are growing on me. It's truly an art form, that I'm learning to appreciate more and more each day.

I love it <3

Hi Prasad,
Thank you! I hope you are rethinking in a good way!  ;D

Each one took me about 15 minutes.  :o It took me about 2 hours to come up with the original flourish and then once I had it figured out, I just followed my first one. It was fun and meditative.  :)

Thanks! It's funny - I wasn't a fan of offhand flourishing either. I have had a couple of books on it and for many years they just gathered dust on my bookshelf. Then I took Jake Weidmann's class at IAMPETH and learned how to do a bird flourish and I was hooked! I came home and dug out the books and was like, "Why didn't I like this?!"  ???

But I'm not a big fan of birds so it was never my favorite. However, I've been working on some that are not birds and I'm really excited about it. I'll be ready to share in a couple months probably!  ;D I'm still learning so they are beginner quality but you have to start somewhere!  ;D

That was beautifully done Erica.

Rethinking....  Was a little worried initially  :)
Specially after seeing all the "Post your Exchange: threads....  but, What they hey?  Have to start somewhere...

I asked how long, to kind of get myself prepared for the time involved.  15 minutes for Erica = maybe and hour, hour and a half for me? ;)

And like you said,  it will be fun for sure

That is wonderful!
And the Reverse capital L!  Wow!!

Beautiful. Maybe one day I will practice off-hand flourishing!

I like the L, but I'm not sure I understand the "reverse capital L" part...  :o

It's written in reverse from how it is usually written so the shade is on the opposite side.  :D

This is so beautiful!!!
I'm a little confused as to what off hand flourishing is?
Title: Re: Valentine Flourish
Post by: Erica McPhee on June 19, 2015, 03:46:34 PM
Hi Ruth-Mary,
Off-hand flourishing is the term used to describe extensive flourishing that is done either with text or in the shape of something (as an ornate picture), usually a bird.

Off-hand referred to the method used (which involved a straight holder and throwing the strokes away from you) because the strokes were typically done in a continuous manner and not pre-planned (therefore "offhand"). However, I don't do it that way, I still use my oblique. And I draw most of it out before hand. At least the basic outline.

If I need correcting by someone who knows it better than I, please do!  ;D

Erica, this card for your valentine exchange is SO GORGEOUS! I've been a little nervous about flourishing. Must break out of my shell and flourish everything!
