Hello,

I'm sorry I'm not on here often but try to check in now and then. I love what is contributed here and am always amazed at the contributions Erica has made to the community with this forum.

Oh how I wish I could go! One of these years! Enjoy and would love if you post a few pics when you do.

Best to all!

Spencerian Script / Re: No drills club
« on: August 02, 2016, 06:45:41 AM »
I do not regularly do drills specifically. If I do plan to write in a specific hand and take the time to do drills beforehand, I do see a significant difference in how long it takes to warm up and get into a flow. I have a heavy hand and unfortunately many bad habits so warming up with drills and practice running through an exemplar of letterforms does help my lettering.

I have always dabbled in and out of creative ventures but just before getting serious with my calligraphy interest I was in school and have taken a bit of a break. Ive been applying some of my studies while delving back into calligraphy.

I'm with a few of you regarding the housework, my rooms are becoming a whole house studio. Not all functioning I might add but any surface is plagued with sheets of samples, supplies and job paraphanelia! It's driving me crazy!!! Hence a New Years resolution to create a functional workspace that will be just for my work! My family is on board with that for sure!!! Balancing the creative side and the execution side is an interesting topic of study moving forward!

Tools & Supplies / Quills! Where to get them and how to make them!
« on: December 02, 2015, 09:27:38 PM »
Hello Folks!

My nephew asked for quill pens for xmas and I have no Idea where to buy and of all things how to carve them.

Any suggestions where to buy and best tutorials or reference to carve them. I feel like I've stumbled across something at some time but truthfully have not had a need at this point to work with them. Any help is so appreciated.

By the way, happy holiday season to all!

Best,
Kelly

Tools & Supplies / Re: Walnut ink vs Higging Eternal black ink
« on: November 02, 2015, 10:18:06 PM »
I am so intrigued now. Definitely going to revisit using this ink. I do have to agree that leaving a new bottle open or aired out does improve it's use and have used gum Arabic to keep from a frayed look on some papers. This thread has been filled with some great information. Thank you Ken and others for such great information.

I don't mind Higgins Eternal for practice and if I'm using better quality paper for practice otherwise the lines are not as crisp and it's cheap. Walnut ink is my favorite go ink for practice too. It is easy to clean and looks so lovely!

This might help. It is a video for beginners by Harvest Crittenden of Acorn Arts. She was one of the amazing instructors at IAMPETH this year. Someone recommended it to me some time ago. She goes over a bit about posture and positioning and many other very important basics that are good fundamentals.

Here is the link:

Hope this helps!
