I have 2 physical portfolios. (They’re repurposed wedding albums that I got 60% off at Michael’s.). One has calligraphed envelope sample that can be removed from the plastic sleeve. It also has samples of place cards I calligraphed, prayers & such, menus, & other similar samples.
I also have an interest in print making. The other book has samples of wedding programs, galas, invitations, and other similar printed, letterpressed, materials. I also can apply colored foil onto paper projects. (Usually a brilliant gold, but I can generally find almost any color.)
I take both books when I meet with clients. It gives them some insight into what I can do. They also get inspiration about their own upcoming project.

« on: February 14, 2024, 07:06:49 AM »I only recently learned about this "Japanese postcard art," (thank you, @jeanwilson) and very much like what I've seen and learned!
I especially like the simplicity, both in the art and the words which seems to make it very much non-threatening to many who may otherwise say "I don't do art." Reminds me a bit of sashiko stitching/mending.
My current focus is still on Spencerian for everyday handwriting, but one day ...
As an aside, isn’t @jeanwilson great??!! We are enriched by her presence here at The Forum!! She is a wonderful teacher/mentor/friend! Thank you@jeanwilson !

When I was addressing my daughter’s wedding invitations (2012), I had one returned TWICE, with a sticker that said, “No such address”. I checked with the groom’s mother & she confirmed that the address was correct. I was writing in “plain” Copperplate. I finally got a small Manila envelope & tucked the last rejected envelope inside. I made a typed, computer-generated label and affixed it on the manila envelope and it was delivered just fine. Apparently, the postal worker couldn’t read cursive!
I have a good friend who is employed as a mortgage loan broker. She was at a closing & the buyers had received a note, written in cursive, from their own realtor, that they could not read. She had to read it to them orally, so that they could do what their real estate agent was telling them to do. Sigh! WHO thinks not teaching kids how to communicate is a good idea??

I have often thought about going to my “local” elementary school and asking if I could offer an after-school class (non-credit) on handwriting. I don’t have “perfect” penmanship. My handwriting is, unfortunately, very personalized. However, I’ve seen handwriting posters at teacher supply stores & can reproduce the letters, if I pay attention and try. It’s not much to offer, but I know more than the kids & I think that I could teach kids how to write in cursive. What do you think? As a parent, would you like this to be available for your kids??

I feel exactly the same! I have Dick Jackson’s book. - It’s one that I learned Copperplate (English Roundhand”) + Eleanor Winters’ book. Thank goodness that we were lucky enough to have talented letteres who published guides for us!!

That’s lovely, Ken! I write at a 55 degree slant. That’s just what I learned! I find other slants to be appealing. But, I love the 55 degree slant!

When I was learning Copperplate, I practiced 1 hour per day, Monday - Thursday. I practiced 4 hours on Friday & 8 hours on Saturday and Sunday! (Yes, I go to church on Sunday! Sundays were really busy!) I was DETERMINED to conquer Copperplate! I don’t think I would have made it with any less effort!! I’m still “a hack” (unlike experts like @Ken Fraser & @Erica McPhee!), but it’s really pretty writing & I get hired enough to suit me and provide me an outlet for my creative urges!
