For the metal flanges on pen holders, would it help to store them in a cup or jar of dry rice to draw out moisture? Or store them in a container with silica gel packets?

Hi Janis.

Are you using powdered or liquid Gum Arabic?

Perhaps switching from the one you are using to the other kind might tell you if your PearlEx is at fault?

On February 6-7, 2021 I will  hosting a Zoom class for my friend Laurie Pearson who is a calligrapher, graphic designer, and mixed media artist.

https://www.calligraphycrushclasses.com/class-list

Envelope Treasure Box
February 6-7, 2021
2-4pm CST both days
Recordings will be available after class for 2 weeks.

Laurie will be teaching how to create a secret treasure box that looks like an innocent stack of vintage envelopes. It's a great conversation piece!

It would make a great gift for Valentines, Galentines, and Mother's Day!

Trust me, before you've finished your first box you'll be dreaming up the next envelope boxes you'll want to make!

Hope to see you in class!

Hi Angela.

Here are some great books:

The Art and Craft of Hand Lettering - Annie Cicale
Foundations of Calligraphy - Sheila Waters
The Zanerian Manual
Spencerian Script by Michael Sull

I also like "Calligraphy: A Complete Guide" by Juilen Chazal for all the interesting styles.

Hi everyone! I've done a few in-store calligraphy events for Tiffany & Co. and Louis Vuitton, personalizing cards for customers. One was a fun experience, one not so much!

If you have done these type of events, I have some questions I'd like to ask you for an article I'm writing! Erica gave me permission to post this request.

I've created a Typeform survey to make it easy to respond. If you would please DM me @calligraphycrush on Instagram, or fill out the contact form at https://calligraphycrush.com/contact/, then I'll send you the link to the survey. Thanks so much! -- Maureen

I've enjoyed watching scopes from Joi Hunt,  Nina Tran, Kei  Haniya, and David Grimes!

Sorry I missed Schin's!!

I'd love to see one from Moya, too! And Erica!!

My first scope attempt may be this Saturday afternoon during a workshop with Carol Pallesen in Houston.

Tools & Supplies / Re: Photography for styled shoots

Thanks for all the great advice!

My web designer wants us to take photos of each sample, then she will crop and superimpose them on pre-styled backgrounds, if that makes sense. So the samples need to be evenly lit and good detail.

We were shooting straight above the samples, no tripod, no flash. We used a 500 Lumen LED flashlight as the light source straight above the sample. Distance from camera was about 2 feet.

The camera is a Canon EOS with a zoom lens EF-S 18-55mm. I guess the zoom lens is the issue?

What lens or lenses should we get for these close up shoots?

The remote shutter release sounds like a great idea.

What are some good online stores for purchasing Canon equipment?

I would love to know what cameras, tripods, lighting, and other set up supplies calligraphers are using to take styled photos for their web sites!

My husband has a Canon DSLR, lighting equipment, umbrellas, and a fabric cube to put samples in to diffuse the light. However, we can't get the calligraphy details crisp enough to suit my web site designer, especially for blue or gray inks.

Any suggestions on Canon lenses or other tips would be appreciated!

For taupe, I mix a small amount of indigo blue into yellow ochre gouache, then add in white.

Running late again! My apologies! I had the hardest time deciding what master to mimic! I'm going to attempt a bird flourish. Wish me luck!
