Tools & Supplies / Calligraphy Ruler
« on: April 12, 2019, 01:00:33 PM »
Greetings,

I have searched, without success, to see if any US vendors carry Aquino da Silva's Calligraphy Ruler. Does anyone know if a US vendor carries this that I may have overlooked?

Thank you,
Catherine

Hi Kristin - thank you for the reply. You were helpful  :) I'll keep checking around from time to time to see if one pops up anywhere.

Warm regards,
Cat

I do not see this DVD available at Paper and Ink Arts. Does anyone know if someone else still carries this DVD?

Thanks,
Catherine

Open Flourish | General Discussion / Re: Collecting pen holders

I have three and one of them is the Yoke Dual Pen that I practiced with while trying to find my 'sweet' spot.

My main reason for having more is I like using the Brause EF66 (which is a small nib) and the Hunt 101. I did not want to tempt fate manipulating the flange so I have a pen for each nib.

I admit it is hard not to buy more. There are many great pen makers out there and their work is beautiful, as well as functional.

Tools & Supplies / Re: Hunt 101 vs Leonardt Principal EF
« on: December 27, 2018, 09:55:50 AM »
Hi Nancy

A little backstory. My funds are limited so I did not want to 'ruin' a bunch of nibs while learning so I started out with a chalkboard and then moved on to using a pencil to develop a light hand.

When I felt confident I started with the 'novice' recommended 'G' (in my case a Nikko G) and found it too stiff.

After doing more research here on the forum I picked up a Hunt 101 and the small Brause EF66. I love both of these nibs (I did not try the Leonardt because I have seen too many experts remark on its unreliability). Since there is a size difference I do like Janis and have each nib in a different holder (I am left handed and use a right handed oblique holder).

The key takeaway here is the Hunt 101 and Brause EF66 are more flexible than the 'G' so if you feel you have a heavy hand keep in mind you will need to lighten up your touch.

I do not know if this helps or not, but I wanted to share another relatively new user experience with you  ;)

May your thoughts be as glad as the shamrocks,
May your heart be as light as a song,
May each day bring you bright, happy hours,
That stay with you all the year long.

Wishing you a very Happy Birthday!

Very beautiful Ken.

Merry Christmas and wishes for a gentle New Year.

I found, and continue to find, using a good ductus that shows the breakdown of a letter beneficial. When I started it was NOT intuitive at all as to how to correctly form the letters.

I printed out Erica's Pen lessons, Ken's Copperplate exemplar, Zaner's exemplar and relevant pages of John Jenkin's 'The Art of Writing'. I went back over the pages Erica created and traced the arrows in red. I find having the color variation is easier on my eyes; I can follow it better.

I also appreciated the way Jenkin's presents the principal strokes, numbered these, and details how various combinations are used to create the letterforms.

...you are trying to re-stitch the hole in the sleeve and ask a family member for a 'pin' and they hand you your dippen.

Kind Critique / Re: How can I make this come to life?
« on: November 07, 2018, 11:11:55 AM »
Rachael - you did a great job on this, and like me, you are your own worse critic  ;)

IMHO to make it look more alive I would work on the effect of it jumping out of the water. You have several little dots and squiggles under whale that I assume represent the water effect of the jump.

I googled 'Whale jumping out of water images' and found several examples that would be good references. Maybe do this google search and look at some of the images and see if they add that extra life you are looking for.

You are good at flourishing and I bet you will make a great flourished water effect.

Greetings - I hope the WD-40 works, but if it does not, maybe drop an email to one of the forum's experts, 'Chris Yoke' at [email protected]. He may have a solution.
