Welcome to Flourish, Sckrybe - a fellow Angeleno! There are quite a few of us here. Hope you will share your work with us sometime, would love to see! Loved reading the stories too - funny how people associate good handwriting with being a good husband, LOL.

By the way, are you in the Society for Calligraphy?  ;D

Oops, instagram.com/sckrybe is my link for what I have thus far. I'll change my siggy when I'm home.

As for the Society(C), this is the first I've heard of it, so no. I am lone Calligrapher, the Ronin of the One-Handed Pointed Pen Style. I've had a couple of friends tell me that the Society for Creative Anachronism would love to meet me, but,...uh,..I don't wear full Medieval Knight Regalia in public parks.

would love to see one of your Patient Care Reports in calligraphy and what the reaction to it is!

Can't actually show it as that's a HIPPA violation (Health Insurance Portability and Privacy Act) which is a big, scary law that would cause me to have loss of my EMT certification, big fat fine, and possible jail time. As for making a sample one, I value my privacy as well so to openly show what company I work for...well, as far as I know, I'm the only EMT in the LA County area to have this particular hobby and trait...

...as for the reactions....they are priceless.

Supervisor: *Double Take* "Did...did you....write this?! Whaaat?! How?!"

Me: "With a pen."

Coworkers: "How...how did this guy do this? Stamps? Stencils?"

Me: *Writes down word with pen real quick on scrap paper, as they still don't know who I am* "It starts with an 's', but here's the word your looking for." *Put down paper with "skill" emblazoned on it in Textura Quadrata.

Supervisor: "I'm...I'm not sure we can turn this in...y'know what? Let's just turn this in and see what they say!"

*One Week Later*

Company Biller: "I just got off the phone with Medical, they said the only requirements are: black ink, and legible. Considering this is the most legible handwriting I'll ever see from these men with kindergarten chickenscratches I'd say you're fine...and then some. Also...my daughter is single."

o.O

Crabby ER Nurse: "Thank you for waiting two hours to drop off the patient with a minor issue as the Fire Department brought in the multiple trauma patie--what in Grey's Anatomy Fifth Edition is this?! This is beautiful!!"

Me: "Thanks, just killin' time. Sign here, and they're all yours. Here's your copy, I pressed down hard for the carbon copy."

ER Nurse: "Wow...you don't see this everyday...by the way, my daughter's single."

o.O *Runs away*

Average Patient: "....what the?! Here I have a minor medical issue and your sitting there making fancy writing! I mean, it's nice and all...but...oh you did this while I made you wait an hour? Never mind."

Also: "Son, I haven't seen handwriting like this since 1950...guess there's some hope for your generation after all. Now, I'm gonna take a nap."

Good whatever-time-zone-you-are-in,

I am an Amateur Calligrapher(TM) that picked up the pen in November of 2012. I found this wonderful website through Instagram; username the same, where I post my less-than-spectacular attempts and turning odd shapes and scribbles in an attempt to resemble the beauty of the written word that I am quite envious of.

My current trade is an EMT in the Los Angeles area and surrounding cities, despite working on an Ambulance, I don't do emergencies per se. This affords me vast amounts of downtime where we post for hours at a local shopping center or parking lot. Rather than sit around like a bump on a log and watch Netflix on my phone or somesuch, I decided to take up whatever self-improvement projects I could to be productive alongside passing the time.

When I came across a Manuscript Pen from an arts store for under ten dollars, I looked at the samples of italics it produced and thus started my; now a year and a half, love affair with calligraphy. My original intention being only to improve my horrible handwriting. As such I began to turn in Patient Care Reports in simple foundational and italics, and eventually moving my way up to Gothic and more complex hands.

Going against the advice any professional would give to master one Hand at a time, I am more or less a 'Jack of All Hands Terrible At All'. Being entirely self-taught, I've had no mentor or workshop to follow, so my training is based solely on my own interests and moods.

As my interest began to include other Hands, and I discovered that calligraphy need not be an expensive hobby, my current 'practice' is primarily a Noodler's Creaper Flex Nib ($14) and my journal from B&N Bombay leather wrap parchment paper ($15) so I can always write or practice whenever I wish.

Primarily, I make use of quote of the day for headers in the start of an entry and take a picture to upload it. Though I had more varied works with a former account that I sadly had to delete due to another user.

Otherwise, I quite pleased with this discovery of fellow enthusiasts; be they beginners, professionals, et cetera, and this forum. I look forward to getting to know the lot of you in the time yet to come and to look upon your fantastic works with my ever-envious eyes and dropped jaw.
