Flourish Forum News / Re: Please read regarding emails!

Oh Erica! I know how it feels for one thing after another to go horribly wrong! I find these things generally come in waves that nearly drown you. I'm sorry! Here's to hoping that you'll be relaxing in the beach rather than nearly drowning sometime very soon!

I have that speedball acrylic ink and find it absolutely dreadful! I generally have issues with sloppy transitions from shade to hairline with all acrylic inks.

If you are mostly looking for a good practice ink walnut ink made from crystals is my favorite! It is so inexpensive, easy to use, easy to clean up, and just overall performs so well.

What a funny story!

I don't open my door for anyone I don't recognize. I feel quite vulnerable at home just me and my small children.

Such beautiful work! I'm especially smitten with that olive and swietenia pen... I've been staring at it for far too long! Bravo

Open Flourish | General Discussion / Re: Are Blanzy 2552 and 552 the same?
« on: February 10, 2016, 10:36:16 PM »
Just one more voice to the choir, they are not the same. I have and enjoy 552's but I find them neither as fine nor as flexible as the 2552. Possibly not as long lasting either, but can't say that with absolute certainty.

Dr martin's is by far my favorite white, but I mix it in a separate jar and dilute it nearly half and half with distilled water.

Tools & Supplies / Re: How often do you use your 'other' nibs?
« on: January 30, 2016, 11:23:01 AM »
Oh man, my nib usage is so weird! I mostly do envelope work where customers provide their own envelopes, and often I'm mixing a custom ink color. So usually I'm working with a paper and ink combo that I've never used before. It usually takes a good hour to find the best nib for the job and often it ends up being a nib I haven touched on months. I do always start with my trusty blanzy 2552 though since its smooth, agreeable with most inks and papers, and overall just suits my hand.

If I'm practicing I'll grab any used nib I've got hanging around and use it till it won't write anymore. I try to make use of all my various nibs except a handful which I hate and need to give away. There aren't many of those though.

I'm not sure, but I have tried mixing 2 different brands of black sumi together and it was a disaster.

Acrylic inks will not generally mix well with anything other than acrylics, in my experience anyhow. Bleedproof white mixes fine with gouache for me, but not with anything else I've tried. Sumi inks have been tricky to mix with as well. I haven't found anything that won't mix with PearlEx.

Zebra G withstands the flame prep method well. Just pass thru a flame briefly for like 1 second or less. Do that 2 times or so.

If it makes you feel better, I wrote the wrong return address on ONE HUNDRED CRANE LETTRA ENVELOPES. It was definitely after I had addressed the front of them all. Kinda felt like the worst moment of my life when I discovered the mistake at 1:30 am.

I used to read novels and watch television shows in the evening with my husband. I still like to watch TV with the hubs  sometimes, but I almost never read anymore. I maybe read 3 or 4 books all of last year! I hardly have time to 'practice' calligraphy anymore either. I'm usually doing envelope jobs during what was previously practice time. I miss that, but envelope jobs pay better than practice lol.

I only have one tube of Holbein gouache (opera) which is perhaps not a good sample size, but it gives me trouble with sloppy transitions from shade to hairline unless it's diluted so much as to no longer be sufficiently opaque. I'm generally comfortable mixing gouache, but this one hadn't given me great results, so I have not wanted to shell out any more money to try their other colors.

Tools & Supplies / Re: Perfect Pearls and Other Pearlescent Things
« on: December 29, 2015, 11:15:32 PM »
I've used perfect pearls and found them not quite as pleasant to work with overall as pearl ex. I believe the perfect pearls have gum arabic pre mixed with the pigment, so that's nice. I've bought mica pigments from a wholesale makeup supplier once and they were pretty much exactly the same as working with pearl ex, which is to say, very nice. The particle size matters. Larger particle size (more glittery, less shimmery) is tricky to work with.
