Video by Harvest Crittenden about Gilding with Instacoll
« on: March 12, 2015, 03:28:34 AM »
I found this on Harvest's site and asked her permission to post it – this is extremely helpful as she explains in detail how to apply the size (the Instacoll) and the gold leaf! Can't wait to try it once I get my Instacoll ;).

It's the second video on the site. The introduction to Pointed Pen is also great!

Yes!  That video is fantastic.  And it makes me want to take classes with Harvest - she's so friendly and such a great teacher.

I also highly recommend those gilding bridges!  I know Rebecca Sinnen makes some, and John Neal Books sells them, too.  I have one I bought from a local woodworker (the husband of a local calligrapher in our society) and it really does make a big difference.

Really? I have seen other calligrapher's use cotton gloves with the three 'writing' fingers cut open to prevent oils going to the surface … but thanks for the tip! – You know that Harvest offers online courses? I took two now, they are wonderful!

It's just that I am a bit hesitant at the moment about buying supplies … would love to try it. I bought 2 drying racks from Rebecca, they are great!

I use cotton gloves with fingers cut out for writing always :D  I don't think the gilding bridge is necessary at all - you can very easily do without.  It is just nice to have.  Like so many of our toys ... :)

Wow, you're disciplined!! I'll give it a try. I often use blotter paper as a cussion though, this could be too 'sticky', make my hand not glide though for pointed pen … but I don't like using these covering sheets always … thanks for the info!

How about a playing card, Stefanie?  I won't pretend that I love it (or often remember to use it!), but the trick does work very nicely.

I'll give that a try, but it hasn't worked so great for me in the past! Thanks for thinking about it though, Andy :)!
