Love this!  Makes me chuckle when I think of our conversation in another thread about the Martha Stewart article!

Beautiful work, Ken.

Lori, I just bought it in French!  I'll let you know when I get a chance to go through it.

Do you mean the swelling point on the stem which is near to the baseline, like in the Spencerian D?  It's true, it's higher up the stem in Copperplate /engrossers, and is supposed to thin out again before it reaches the baseline.  Nothing to stop you mixing and matching different styles, though!

Spencerian Script / Re: Business Writing

This is more or less the cursive writing that was being taught when I was a kid in the 80s, growing up in Michigan.

Oh, yes, they're all iron gall (except maybe the ivory?  There I'm not sure).

Thank you!  I've heard of this dishwasher technique.  I'll try it.

It's funny-- I used saliva, toothpaste, windex, a flame... everything else!  Even McCaffery's couldn't eat through whatever is on there!  Never had a nib behave this way, ever.  Hopefully the dishwasher can handle it.  I do hope so, it's a GREAT nib for writing out large text like table cards.  Such beautiful thick downstrokes, and fine hairlines too.

Lovely!

I had a Brause Rose that worked beautifully for me.  The next time I ordered one, I could NOT get it to write!  No matter what I did to prepare the nib, the ink would not descend those last couple of milimetres...  I don't know if I got a bad one, or what.  Do you have any advice for me, Ken?

It definitely dries darker, Estefa!  I've never put any gum arabic in my McCaffery's ink.  It VERY fine and thin, makes incredible hairlines, but I never found it needed a binding agent.

It eats your nibs, though.  ;)

Oh my gosh!  Thanks for pointing out Linda's tagline-- I ADORE it.  And I 100% agree!

Glad you picked up your pens again, Lori.  I hear the same kind of thing all the time at the post office, of all places.  They're always amazed when I tell them I'm doing this pretty much full time, and that there's a market!  It always makes me laugh.  The post office workers hold the envelopes, look at them really closely, turn them over in their hands, and say things like "Mais, c'est joli, ça !"  and "Ohh là, ce n'est pas imprimé !"  (Oh hey, that's pretty acutally!  Hey!  It's not printed!")  To which I answer, "C'est de la calligraphie !" The last guy followed up with, "Dis-donc, ce n'est pas mort, la poésie !" (What do you know?  Poetry isn't dead.)

I always laugh out loud!

Pretty!  Did you design the penholder, Ken?  Or is that a Unique Obliques?

28
Gosh, thanks Ellen!  I'm glad it's helpful.

Amazing work!  So nice to meet you!

Pencil work is a must!  I love working with pencils, the ritual of sharpening, making ovals, warming up.  I think it's important to fall in love with all the prep-work!   ;D
