Layout And Design For Calligraphers - Alan Furber

I picked this little paperback up from my local book store on Monday and have really enjoyed it! It's only about 60 pages, and you can get a used copy on Amazon directly from Alan for $1.00. The examples in the book are largely Italic and Foundational, but the principals can be used for composing any variety of projects.

Post back here if you pick a copy up, I'd love to discuss!

I just bought a copy!  This one has been on my list for AGES - thanks for the reminder :)

It'll take a while to arrive  (shipping from the US) - I'll check back in when it does.

Yes, I like this book as well!  It illustrates a few simple aspects of design that are easy to put into practice.

Is this helpful for someone with absolutely NO design background?

@Milonguera - I think so! It talks about a few concepts that designers will know about from school, but they are also things that you learned about empirically. Balance, contrast, etc. All things that are pretty easy to grasp.

Yes, this is exactly for someone with no design experience!  His second book is also pretty good.  Erica recommended them a while ago.

I ordered this on your suggestion, David, and it got here yesterday and it's exactly what I needed! Thanks for the suggestion. I know nothing about design, so I'm soaking it up. I'm getting lots out of all of the examples given for what is acceptable, but then how to improve them. To me, the acceptable ones look great, then I see the improved one and think, "Ohhh, okay. Yeah that is better." I also think the example of the isolated text is so cool! Not something I've seen (or at least noticed) before, but it's so powerful.

Thanks again for recommending it!
