Title: space between letter?

hello all

is there a form of how tight or loose between letters in a word?  my child is learning spencerian , sometimes she write apart between letter and sometimes write closer between letters in a word. I don't know what is correct space in between letter to letter in a word?

Hi @Miranda_J -

I am no expert, but recently took an online class on Spencerian by Master Penman Harvest Crittenden.  For Spencerian, she referred to this graphic similar to these from the Theory of Spencerian Penmanship from around 1874 which shows the appropriate letter spacing within words.  I've also posted a graphic showing what is considered standard letter width for Spencerian.

When viewing other examples of Spencerian writing, it seems there can be a bit of personal variations, but I think it is a good starting place.

That's wonderful to know.  I think this applies to all penmanship: consistency.

For me, what is beautiful might be different for another.  However, when we see symmetry and consistency, we somehow feel a love for it.  To this, I cry out for consistency, second to proportion.

I think the smaller you write (proportion) the more spaces you need to give.
